UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN LIBRARY
Head, Digital Library Production Service
CONTEXT
The Digital Library Production Service (DLPS), a part of the University of
Michigan University Library, is one of the nation's premier organizations
for the creation and support of digital library resources and
infrastructure, with production level support for electronic library
collections. Comprised of more than 20 staff members, including librarians,
programmers, and skilled technical staff, DLPS is funded primarily with a
base budget for both staff and equipment, and relies on significant grant
and revenue funding for a variety of new and incremental initiatives. Staff
members within the DLPS have responsibility for creating online access
mechanisms, data loading, security, and significant conversion activities.
DLPS provides these services to the University of Michigan as well as to
other institutions. Online collection resources include several million
pages of book and journal collections (full-text and page images), several
hundred thousand rich images in visual resource collections, large
collections of finding aids, and emerging work with many other formats. DLPS
is also the primary development organization for DLXS
(http://www.dlxs.org/), a leading-edge initiative for the development of a
digital library access system.
DLPS is a department within the Library Information Technology (LIT)
division, one of three major divisions of the University Library. LIT is
focused on the development and maintenance of digital resources and provides
principal technology management services and support for the University
Library system. LIT focuses on: developing and managing digital collections
and access tools; providing and sustaining a comprehensive computing
environment for University Library patrons and staff; providing frameworks
and systems to federate distributed information resources; and serving as a
catalyst for addressing electronic information issues on campus. LIT employs
approximately 45 FTE staff and is organized into 3 units, including DLPS
(responsible for digital library resources and infrastructure), Library
Systems (responsible for managing the Library's online catalog and related
tools) and Desktop Support Services (responsible for managing the computing
infrastructure of the Library). The 2002-2005 LIT planning document is
available online at http://www.lib.umich.edu/lit/planning-2002-5.html.
Reporting to the Associate Director for Library Information Technology, the
Head of DLPS manages all operational aspects of DLPS, including:
Management of more than 20 FTE staff in several functional areas;
DLXS development, planning, and outreach;
Budget management across DLPS ($1.5m of combined annual base budget, grant,
and revenue funds), including DLXS-related budget management;
General strategic planning for DLPS;
A role on the University of Michigan campus and beyond (i.e., nationally and
internationally) representing the University Library's digital library
efforts and capabilities and promoting appropriate adoption in those venues.
The Head of DLPS is expected to provide vision and leadership for digital
libraries (particularly digital library access systems and their
architecture, and large-scale digital conversion) within the University of
Michigan, but also to play a role nationally with partners in organizations
such as the Digital Library Federation. The Head of DLPS also operates as a
Senior Manager within the University Library and, within the Library
Information Technology (LIT) division, works with other LIT management staff
to provide strategic vision and planning for Library-wide technology.
