Director -Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities
University of Virginia

The Vice President and Provost invite applications/nominations for the position
of Director of the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities,
reporting directly to the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies.

Institute:

In its first ten years, the Institute has become an international leader in the
innovative application of advanced technologies to  humanities research and
publication. Annually, the Institute awards a two-year fellowship to a
humanities scholar at the University of Virginia.  Fellows work collaboratively
with Institute faculty and staff in designing and developing projects that
facilitate computer-assisted research and analysis of the human record, and the
publication and dissemination of findings and results. In support of the
projects, Institute faculty and staff participate in research and development
of scholarly communication, in particular cultural heritage, humanities, and
publishing standards.   Today, IATH helps fellows to raise external funding
support for activities that extend beyond the range of the IATH fellowship,
such as travel, additional release time, additional staff or graduate student
support, and collaborations with other institutions.  Over the past five years,
IATH has brought in 27 awards for a total of over $5 Million.  As it enters its
second decade, the Institute looks forward to expanding its mission to include
national and perhaps international fellowships in arts and humanities research
and scholarly communication.

Responsibilities:

The position of Director is a five-year renewable term with a joint faculty
appointment in a humanities department.  The Director will oversee and
participate in the Institute's administration (including development of
policies and procedures), budget, and fundraising.  The Director will also keep
regular oversight of existing institute projects, and will work closely with
faculty, nine direct reports and several part time students in the design and
creation of new projects.  Ensuring that all projects represent the very
highest quality of work is essential to the Director's job. The position calls
for collaborative work with a diverse population of university people: with the
faculty and the administration, of course, but with students as well, and with
the professional staff of many campus organizations (such as the Library,
Information Technology and Communications, and the University Press).  The
Director will stay abreast of important national and international developments
in digital humanities work, and will be expected to promote extramural
collaborations of various kinds, not least of all with extramural fellows.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be a tenured professor or associate professor of
an arts or humanities faculty and possess a strong record of scholarship,
teaching, administrative experience, and service. In addition to being an
established scholar in an arts or humanities discipline, the candidate will
have knowledge of advanced technologies sufficient to understand the potential
for transforming scholarly research and communication. The candidate should
have good communication and interpersonal skills, experience dealing with a
diverse academic community, and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively
with people from varied disciplines and backgrounds. The candidate should have
successful experience in grant writing, corporate donations, and other
fundraising.
