SENIOR SOFTWARE ANALYST/PROGRAMMER: MULTIMEDIA APPLICATION ARCHITECTURE
Vice President, Information Technology (PA14/15 )
Position#: 00012220 (Second Listing)

The newly funded Variations3 project is building a digital music library
in a box that can be deployed at institutions around the nation. Based on
the pioneering work of Variations2 (http://variations2.indiana.edu ),
Variations3 will take the system that is currently in production at
Indiana University in Bloomington and, based on requirements gathered from
partner institutions, create a system that can be readily implemented
elsewhere. Variations3 is seeking a software architect to design and
develop this exciting new system, one that will eventually be released as
open source.

Variations3 will provide students and faculty with online access to and
annotation of digitized music via streaming audio and scanned scores.
Support for streaming video is also being considered. An XML-based
metadata model designed specifically for searching music collections
underlies these functions and is supported by custom tools for digitizers
and catalogers. Responsibilities include system architecture, design,
development, and support for this complex set of distributed applications
based on web services and AJAX. In addition, the applications integrate
with other information systems on campus such as course registration, the
online library catalog, course reserves listings, and the central
authentication server.

Technical development is in support of a major grant from the Institute of
Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This three-year position is funded
through September 30, 2008, with potential for renewal. Final appointment
level depends upon the qualifications and experience of the selected
candidate.

Qualifications: Bachelors degree required. Professional experience in
systems analysis and design plus three or more years of programming
experience required, including substantial experience with Java,
relational databases, and XML. Unix system administration, Perl, and
networking are essential as is experience with web servers and web
technologies. Ability to interact professionally with faculty, librarians
and technical staff as well as good customer service and communication
skills required. Graduate degree in computer science or closely related
field preferred. Experience with digital libraries or digital media
applications, digital audio/video and streaming multimedia, security
technology, web services, AJAX, and software packaging desired. Working
knowledge of music and music notation valuable but not required.

Indiana University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Employment institution.
