The Harvard University Library Office for Information Systems (OIS) has
on offer two jobs that are central to their Global Digital Format
Registry development: a Project Manager (Grade 58) and a Systems
Developer (Grade 57).

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Harvard University Library is engaged in an important project to
create the Global Digital Format Repository (GDFR), which will be a key
infrastructure component for the digital preservation programs of
libraries, archives, and other institutions with the responsibility for
keeping digital assets viable over time. The GDFR will provide
sustainable distributed services to store, discover, and deliver
representation information for digital formats. This information, which
defines the syntactic and semantic rules used for encoding content into
digital form, is a crucial component of any long-term digital
preservation program. The GDFR will form a distributed network of nodes
communicating over a common protocol. This decentralized model will
facilitate the collection and rapid and broad redistribution of local
expertise in digital formats to the wider international preservation
community. This initiative has funding for two years.

PROJECT MANAGER (REQUISITION #25479)

The Harvard University Library is seeking a highly motivated individual
with project management responsibilities for the development of the
Global Digital Format Registry (GDFR). This is a high visibility, high
impact position providing technical and administrative leadership for
the development of a key piece of digital preservation infrastructure.
Reporting to the Digital Library Program Manager, the project manager
will direct a collaborative design process leading to the final
functional requirements and technical specifications for the GDFR data
and service models and network protocols, and will oversee a systems
developer implementing an open source reference implementation of a GDFR
node. Additionally, the manager will be responsible for developing a
community-based technical review process for vetting representation
information submitted to the GDFR and coordinating the initial
population of the GDFR with representation information for a number of
formats in most common use in the digital preservation community. In
pursuing these tasks, the manager will consult regularly with the
Harvard digital library team and with leading international experts in
the digital preservation community. The project manager will also
provide public outreach for the GDFR project through presentations and
participation in leading preservation forums and conferences.

Requirements: Master's degree in computer, information, or library
science or equivalent experience. Candidates must demonstrate fluency
with accepted principles of digital preservation and the role played by
formats in preservation planning and activities, be conversant with
current software development methodologies and best practices, and have
4 year's experience in coordinating substantial collaborative technical
development projects. Self-motivation, enthusiasm, and excellent
organizational, planning, writing, and communication skills are
required. Relevant experience in the high-level architectural design of
information management and retrieval systems and network protocols is
highly desirable, as is familiarity with RDBMS, XML/RDF, LDAP, web
services, Java J2SE, OAI, RSS, and network protocols.

SYSTEMS DEVELOPER (REQUISITION #25476)

The Harvard University Library Office for Information Systems is seeking
a creative individual with systems development responsibilities for the
Global Digital Format Registry (GDFR). The systems developer will
participate in the collaborative design process leading to final
functional requirements and technical specification for the GDFR data
and service models and network protocols. The developer has primary
responsibility for a development process employing extensive
prototyping, periodic review by a project technical advisory board and
other international experts, and iterative re-factoring to produce a
high-quality open source reference implementation of a GDFR node. In
pursuing these tasks, the developer will work closely with the Harvard
digital library team and will consult with leading technical experts in
the international digital preservation community.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree in computer or information science or
equivalent experience. Candidates must demonstrate a minimum of 5 year's
experience in implementing, testing, and documenting high-quality
web-based peer-to-peer systems. Self-motivation, enthusiasm, and
excellent organizational, planning, writing, and communication skills
are required. Experience with RDBMS, XML/RDF, LDAP, web services, web
application frameworks, design patterns, agile software development
methodologies, Java J2SE, and network protocols is necessary.
Familiarity with digital library systems, long-term digital
preservation, OAI, and RSS is highly desirable.
