The North Carolina State University Libraries has been recognized as the
first recipient of the Association of College and Research Libraries’
Excellence in Academic Libraries Award for its teamwork, innovation, and
continuous interaction with students and faculty to further the
educational mission of NC State University. The NCSU Libraries is ranked
27th by the Association of Research Libraries among North America’s top
113 academic research libraries.
The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position
of Associate Head of Information Technology. This role is one of several
assistant/associate head positions the NCSU Libraries has established as
part of its commitment to developing future leaders for academic and
research libraries. The Information Technology Department consists of
five librarians and twelve development and operations staff. This
management position offers the opportunity to participate in the overall
IT strategy for the Digital Library division, and to contribute to the
Libraries’ ambitious agenda for technology infrastructure, online
services, and access to digital collections. The IT Department was
primarily responsible for the 2006 launch of a revolutionary new online
catalog, powered by Endeca software.
Responsibilities
As a member of the IT Department’s leadership team, shares
responsibility for managing the department that develops, implements,
and supports advanced information systems for the Libraries. Supervises
the System Librarians for Digital Projects (2) and the Librarian for the
Integrated Library System. Works closely with Associate Department Head
(head of programming unit) to set priorities for development activities
and to transition production-level support for new products and
services. Serves as primary liaison to the Digital Library Initiatives
Department. Serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams.
Librarians at NCSU Libraries are expected to be active professionally
and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Head of
Information Technology.
Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS, or equivalent advanced degree in library
or information science. Minimum 3 years relevant professional
experience. Experience with library automation software; demonstrated
knowledge of current technology, including relational databases and the
application of Web and metadata standards. Experience with both
proprietary and open source library software applications. Demonstrated
project management experience. Excellent interpersonal skills; ability
to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in
writing. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Ability to set priorities effectively and resolve competing demands in
an atmosphere of fast-paced change. Evidence of leadership and
management potential. Demonstrated record of ongoing professional
development. Preferred: Supervisory experience. Experience with digital
library applications, including XML standards (XSL/XPath, XQuery, XSLT,
XML Schema and namespaces) and scripting languages (e.g., JSP, PHP,
Python). Experience in an academic research library.

The library system (http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/) consists of a central
library and branch libraries for design, natural resources, textiles,
and veterinary medicine. With a staff of 288+ FTE, the Libraries has
nearly 3.6 million volumes, acquires more than 57,000 print and
electronic serials, and has a total annual budget over $25 million, with
approximately $9 million allocated to collections. The NCSU Libraries is
the lead server site for NC LIVE (North Carolina Libraries for Virtual
Education), a multi-type library initiative, making digital resources
accessible to the citizens of North Carolina.
The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, the
Coalition for Networked Information, the Scholarly Publishing and
Academic Resources Coalition, the Council for Library and Information
Resources, and the Center for Research Libraries. Duke University, the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central
University and North Carolina State University form the Triangle
Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined resources of more than
13 million volumes, and collections budgets totaling more than $29 million.
Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers highly competitive salaries in recognition of
applicable education and experience, not less than $65,000 for this
position. Relocation allowance provided. Librarians have non-tenure
track faculty status (without levels of rank). Benefits include: 24 days
vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC comprehensive major medical
insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options. Additional
