Dear all,

I thought this survey would be of interest to some in this group. There's also a related workshop at this year's iPRES.

**** Preservation capabilities: How to assess? How to improve? The BenchmarkDP survey ***

Digital Preservation is making progress in terms of tool development, progressive establishment of standards and increasing activity in user communities, but there is a wide gap of approaches to systematically assess and improve how organizations go about achieving their preservation goals. There is little systematic, well-founded work on assessing organizational processes and capabilities in a transparent, comparable way.

We have recently started a project to change that, and we are inviting you to participate in a survey to assess the community's perceptions and desires with respect to assessment and improvement.

The BenchmarkDP project is issuing a survey to find how practitioners identify and use methods to assess and improve digital preservation activities in their organization. It is an online questionnaire that will start a communication channel for further engagement. The results will be presented at the Capability Assessment and Improvement workshop <http://benchmark-dp.org/2013/06/13/capability-assessment-and-improvement-workshop-at-ipres-2013/> during iPres 2013. Results will be aggregated and anonymized so that they are not attributable to an individual or organisation. The consultation has opened today and will close on July 26. Join your colleagues and ensure your perspective can be heard!

The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete. More reasons why you should complete it and more information on the project can be found below. Please feel welcome to share this with colleagues who you think are interested!

Who are we?

BenchmarkDP is a 3-year research project funded by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF). It has started in November 2012 and is directed by Christoph Becker at the Vienna University of Technology (ICT2012-46).

A core goal is to enable organizations to systematically improve their preservation capabilities. As a first step, we invite you to share your challenges, perspectives and requirements. For more information go to http://benchmark-dp.org<http://benchmark-dp.org/>

Why participate?

We establish and will maintain an on-going dialogue with a wide-range of users, producers, funders and practitioners to engage directly with the very people who will benefit from the resources our project will produce.

The goals of this survey are to analyze organizational processes and organization’s views on how to measure, assess and improve preservation processes. We solicit your opinions and priorities on the value of systematic assessment and requirements on how it would work for you.

The results of the project will be freely available, so if you are interested in improving your digital preservation capabilities, this can be the first step step to influencing the outcome!

Who should participate?

This survey is especially aimed at practitioners and institutions that have an interest in identifying and use methods to assess and improve digital preservation activities in their organization.

How long does it take?

The survey has only 38 short questions and will take less than 20 minutes.
