Please circulate as appropriate **************** The Academic Image Co-operative is developing a web-accessible repository of digital images that support teaching in art history and other disciplines. Led by the Digital Library Federation with support from the College Art Association and with funding from the Andrew W Mellon Foundation, the AIC's emphasis is on digital images that are unencumbered by copyright and on image collections that support particular and well-defined teaching needs. The AIC is currently developing a collection that supports art history survey teaching and is consequently trying to identify copyright cleared images of the c.2,500 art historical objects that figure in two or more of the 10 leading art history survey textbooks. At present, the AIC has approximately 800 images (referring to some 350 art historical objects) whose copyright cleared status is unquestioned. We could complete the collection in a matter of weeks with images (e.g. produced via copystand photography) whose copyright status is unclear in present legal circumstances. Because there are certain risks associated with that strategy we are turning to the community to help us complete the collection with images that are either in the public domain or to which the contributor is able to waive copyright. A list of art historical works for which the AIC is seeking images is available in an Excel spreadsheet which may be viewed or downloaded with most up-to-date browsers at http://www.clir.org/diglib/collections/aic/aicwwoi.xls. Art historians, visual resource professionals and others who are interested in contributing appropriate images to this valuable educational resource are encouraged to contact the AIC by sending an email to [log in to unmask] They may also wish to consult the brief guidelines that outline the copyright status and formats preferred by the AIC for contributed images. Further information about the AIC may be found at http://www.clir.org/diglib/collections/aic.htm.
