Washington, DC USA, August 10, 2005-The U.S. National Commission on

Dr. Kaske brings to NCLIS over 30 years of broad experience in the field
of library and information science, including working as a reference and
systems librarian, researcher, professor, federal grants officer, and
library administrator. He has conducted many library surveys over the
years and participated in numerous research projects that have been
published in the form of technical reports and journal articles. These
experiences have contributed to his deep understanding of data
collection tools, data dictionaries for clearly defining variables,
coding and analyzing data using SPSS and SAS, and how to write up
findings in an understandable manner for key stakeholders.

In his previous position as the head of the Engineering and Physical
Sciences Library at the University of Maryland, he played an active role
in planning, directing, and coordinating policy, as well as analyzing
programmatic or administrative problems and policies. All of these
experiences and qualifications are important for the position of
Director of Statistics and Surveys.

In addition to his position as head of the Engineering and Physical
Sciences Library, he has taught since 1990 as an adjunct in the College
of Information Studies at the University of Maryland. He also was a
consultant for the Census Bureau Library. From 1989 to 1996, was a
Senior Associate with the U.S. Department of Education, Office of
Library Programs. Dr. Kaske also was a professor at the Graduate School
of Library Service at the University of Alabama and associate professor,
The Matthew A. Baxter School of Information and Library Science at Case
Western Reserve University. From 1980 to 1983 he was director, Office of
Research at OCLC Online Computer Library Center.

Trudi Bellardo Hahn, NCLIS Executive Director, spoke highly of Dr.
Kaske's wide experience in the library and information science
profession. "Dr. Kaske will be a tremendous asset to the NCLIS staff. We
look forward to his working closely with the National Center for
Education Statistics (NCES) Library Statistics Program (LSP), including
the Federal-State Cooperative System (FSCS) for Public Library Data.
Representing NCLIS, he will work with officials and decision-makers in
all three branches of government as well as officials, leaders and users
in the library, information, and statistical communities."
