The PREMIS Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata 1.0 was released in
May 2005. Since that time, it has undergone considerable study and
discussion within the digital preservation community. Now, nearly 18
months later, sufficient feedback has been accumulated to warrant
undertaking the first revision of the Data Dictionary - i.e., PREMIS
Data Dictionary 2.0.

The PREMIS Maintenance Activity recently announced the formation of an
Editorial Committee <http://www.loc.gov/standards/premis/ma.html>
responsible for managing the PREMIS Data Dictionary. The Committee's
near-term priority will be to revise the Data Dictionary and related XML
schema.

The revision process will be conducted in collaboration with the digital
preservation community. The forum for participation will be the PREMIS
Implementers' Group e-mail discussion list ("PIG list"). In this forum,
interested parties can make suggestions for and discuss revisions to the
Data Dictionary. Progress on the revision will be reported on the PIG
list.

If you are interested in participating in the revision of the PREMIS
Data Dictionary, please make sure that you are subscribed to the PIG
list. Participation is open to all. To subscribe to the list, send an
e-mail message to [log in to unmask], with message text:

Announcements regarding initiation of the revision will appear shortly
on the PIG list.

Thank you,

The PREMIS Editorial Committee
