Sarah -------------------------------------------------- Metadata Librarian (2 positions) - Content Access Management (CAM) and Illinois Harvest Assistant Professor of Library Administration, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library Position Available: September 21, 2007 (negotiable). This is a full-time, regular, faculty position in the University Library. The University of Illinois Library is at a very exciting and dynamic point in its digital library development. Prior to the current year, digital projects at Illinois were small to medium sized and narrowly focused in scope. An infusion of funding for FY07 has facilitated our entry into several large scale digitization programs, and a recently passed library fee holds promise for future endeavors. UIUC is a member of the Open Content Alliance and houses an Internet Archive scanning center in our high-density shelving facility. Early in the year, we awarded a large RFP for digital scanning services for eleven sizeable collections of Illinois related materials. As a member of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), UIUC will be contributing up to two million volumes to the Google Book Search project in the coming years. Our institutional repository, IDEALS, and our digital preservation program are starting to mature. Last, but not least, we are developing an OAI-PMH based web portal called Illinois Harvest to aggregate and present digital content created at the University of Illinois with digital content about Illinois created by libraries and museums elsewhere. The successful candidates will have an opportunity to help build a great digital library at one of the nation’s premier academic libraries. Duties and Responsibilities: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library seeks two innovative individuals to provide expertise and guidance in metadata schemas and standards and to assist in their implementation within the Library. The Metadata Librarian is responsible for helping plan and manage metadata production of digitization projects for the Illinois Harvest Project and other digital work for the University of Illinois Libraries. The Metadata Librarian is a faculty position reporting to the Head of Content Access Management (CAM). Responsibilities include: - Lead, manage, and coordinate activities relating to metadata production for description, access and preservation of digital materials acquired or held by the UIUC Libraries. Coordinate the work of staff involved in metadata production including providing training and technical assistance to other department and library staff. - Work with the Head of Content Access Management and other faculty and staff involved in large scale digitization work in the planning and implementation of metadata provision for digital resources, including the selection of metadata schema, data elements, thesauri, and development of crosswalks. - Formulate, document, and implement the Library's policies, procedures, and best practices for use of descriptive metadata schemas (such as MARC, MODS, Dublin Core, and other applicable schemas), preservation metadata schemas (such as PREMIS), content standards (such as AACR2 and CCO), controlled vocabularies (such as LCSH, TGN, AAT and other applicable vocabularies) and transmission standards such as METS. Work with other units (such as the University Archives and IDEALS, the campus institutional repository) as necessary to coordinate alignment of existing policies, procedures, and best practices. - Implement and use digital library systems and applications for improving access to digital collections including CONTENTdm, DSpace, DLXS, Olive, Oxygen, Voyager, and/or other local systems in iShare, the Illinois consortial online catalog. Provide input into selection of other digital library systems. - Participate in metadata remediation, transformation, and creation using appropriate schemas to support the Illinois Harvest Portal and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library's growing digital collections. - Create collection level records for the Library's digital collections. - Assist in metadata harvesting using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). - Participate in the Library's research and development efforts. Required Qualifications: - MLS from an ALA accredited graduate program - Minimum of one year’s experience working with metadata in a digital library environment - Experience with one or more of these standards: Dublin Core, EAD, MODS, or VRA. - Experience with XML and XML technologies. - Knowledge of AACR, MARC and national cataloging standards. - Knowledge of Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Classification and Library of Congress Subject Headings. - Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office applications. - Ability to multitask and prioritize, work independently and as a part of a team, have excellent written and oral communication skills, and work in a fast-paced varied work environment. - Outstanding communication skills. Desired: - Experience creating XSLT stylesheets. - Experience with preservation metadata such as PREMIS. - Experience with Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standards (METS). - Cataloging experience with AACR and MARC tagging, preferably on OCLC. NACO, SACO or BIBCO experience. - Experience with an integrated library system, preferably Endeavor Voyager. - Work experience in a research library. - Experience with scripting or programming languages. Salary and Rank: Salary and rank commensurate with credentials and experience. This is a full-time faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on the candidate’s record of research and professional service. Librarians hold faculty rank and title, and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research and service in order to meet University standards for promotion and tenure. Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
