Position available: Digital Repository Software Developer Purdue University Libraries, West Lafayette, IN, USA Purdue University Libraries seek an experienced, enthusiastic research associate to provide professional programming and software development expertise for a variety of digital repository applications of the Purdue University Libraries, especially to help develop, maintain, deploy and support a data repository based on the Fedora digital asset management architecture and custom middleware. The Libraries have embarked upon a dynamic new role within the University, emphasizing integration of librarians into the research mission of Purdue. Librarian researchers are involved in many interdisciplinary research activities across the campus, ranging in areas as diverse as climate change, chemical engineering, agronomy, creative arts and biology. Libraries faculty apply library science knowledge and expertise to interdisciplinary research projects, serving as co-investigators on grant proposals (e.g., NIH, NSF, etc.). The digital repository environment recasts the role of library science in the digital library landscape. Responsibilities: Conduct creative inquiry and analysis to develop prototypes and software applications related to preserving and providing long-term access to scientific data. Collaborate with data producers and repository contributors to develop cutting-edge software applications for managing data. Organize access to data and related resources using traditional and emerging metadata schema. Code appropriate applications to facilitate and enhance access to datasets and other digital collections. Develop specifications, implementation guidelines, and documentation for projects. Help identify research opportunities and collaborate with appropriate faculty and groups on campus to undertake data management related projects. The digital repository software developer reports to the associate dean for research and is an affiliate of the Distributed Data Curation Center (D2C2) http://d2c2.lib.purdue.edu. Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a degree in a relevant subject discipline, or a demonstrated knowledge of computer science and technology through a combination of educational or research background and experience. Work experience with two to three years minimum software development experience. Sound working knowledge of Java, JSPs, HTML, web servers, Linux, XML, web services and relational databases. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to work independently as well as within a team environment and with diverse groups of faculty and graduate research assistants. Excellent analytic and problem solving skills, and the ability to plan, coordinate, and implement projects. Desired Qualifications: Masters Degree in Library Science (ALA accredited) and/or advanced, terminal degree in a relevant subject discipline. Proficiency with XML and metadata manipulation. Background in developing Java servlets and EJBs. Experience working with a range of applications using current and evolving metadata standards and associated technologies, such as Dublin Core. Experience working with open source, repository-centered platforms such as Fedora. Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. This posting has a limited duration of three years with continuation beyond three years dependent upon funding.
