We develop and deliver the highest quality media resources to the nation's teachers and students as classrooms migrate to the digital age and are an R&D leader, creating focused prototypes and vision pieces in collaboration with the world's leading technology companies. The Media Library and Archives (MLA) establishes the policies and procedures for the access, acquisition, intellectual control, and preservation of WGBH’s physical media and digital production and administrative assets. The MLA also offers production organization of archival materials from projects start up to shut down, research services, rights clearances, and licenses WGBH stock footage. The MLA's goal is to promote the efficient and effective use and re-purposing of the WGBH physical and digital assets. POSITION OVERVIEW: WGBH is looking for a Web Developer to lead the implementation of a prototype system to give scholars and researchers access to material in the WGBH Archive via the World Wide Web. Working closely with the Media Library and Archive’s project manager, the Interactive Designer and the Director of Technology for Interactive, the web developer will specify, document and develop the technical architecture of a prototype web site. Site features will be guided by a small group of scholarly users, as well as prior WGBH web sites such as http://openvault.wgbh.org and http://www.teachersdomain.org/. As part of a small cross-functional team working on a web site, the Web Developer’s role will include participating in requirements gathering, writing technical specifications (including testing procedures) and providing end-user technical support for the prototype. The bulk of the web developer’s time will be spent writing code and implementing designs, under the guidance of the Director of Technology. REQUIREMENTS OVERVIEW: To perform the required duties, the Web Developer must possess the skills and qualities required to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, and more than 3 years of work experience solving problems for web-based environments. The ideal candidate has had experience implementing digital archives, using software such as CWIS or Fedora Commons. The Web Developer must demonstrate understanding of Internet technologies including (X)HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML (XSLT, XPath and RDF helpful) and web services (such as REST, SOAP and/or XML-RPC). The Web Developer must be familiar with one or more server-side programming languages, such as Java, Perl, Python or PHP, and one or more RDMS, such as McKoi, SQL, MySQL, Oracle 9 or PostgreSQL. Experience integrating with, or extracting data from, FileMaker Pro will also be helpful. Familiarity with online media workflows (from post-production to compression to distribution) is highly desirable. Experience developing Section 508 or WAI-compliant web sites is a plus. WGBH is a Mac shop, with LAMP servers. Candidates should be prepared to share and discuss code samples.
