David, A few other projects that are treading into this territory are the Library of Congress' Chronicling America: http:[log in to unmask] Kochief: http://code.google.com/p/kochief/ And I've been doing some work (although very early stages, yet) with Blacklight running off of the Talis Platform: http://blacklite.heroku.com/ which will eventually pull in the Umlaut (http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Umlaut) to provide a bridge between OpenURL and linked data.
