The Center for Digital Research and Scholarship (CDRS), a division of Columbia University Libraries/Information Services, seeks an innovative, energetic, and engaged Digital Repository Manager to oversee the University’s institutional repository, Academic Commons.

The Digital Repository Manager is responsible for the successful acquisition, cataloging, and ingest of new content for the repository and has a key role in ensuring the growth and development of Academic Commons. The primary role of the Digital Repository Manager is to make the Columbia community aware of the service; to meet with deans, directors, and faculty groups to describe the repository services; to develop broad and deep understanding of the research output of each part of the University; and to ensure appropriate materials are deposited into the repository. In addition to working closely with faculty, departments, and administrative staff and with members of the CDRS staff, this individual also coordinates efforts with the subject librarians and archivists, the Copyright Advisory Office, the Metadata Working Group, the Libraries Digital Program Division, and educational technologists within the Center for New Media Teaching and Learning. The Digital Repository Manager supervises the Digital Repository Assistant and periodic interns.

Main responsibilities of this position include the following:

- Collection Development: Locating and selecting content for inclusion in Academic Commons. Promoting the repository broadly and deeply. Educating faculty and administrators on the importance of depositing content. Overseeing the collection and ingestion of content. Ensuring quality control. Developing mechanisms and workflows for self-deposit. Managing regular follow-up with faculty, departments, and centers already participating in the repository to keep them engaged and their content up to date.

- Publicity: Creating and distributing marketing materials and handling the publicity and outreach efforts for Academic Commons. Monitoring and reporting on usage and making recommendations for increasing visibility.

- Repository Staff Management: Overseeing the cataloging effort and managing the work of the Digital Repository Assistant.

- Repository Development: Working closely with technical staff at CDRS and with others within the library on tool development and site enhancements. Developing and maintaining internal and user documentation.

Communication and Collaboration: Maintaining awareness of metadata standards and coordinating metadata strategies with Libraries' personnel. Providing regular reports to the Repository Steering Committee and the directors of CDRS, the Libraries Digital Program Division, and the Library Information Technology Office on progress and status. Contributing to the Scholarly Communication Program and helping to supervise the Scholarly Communication interns.

Requirements:

 - An ALA-accredited MLS or the equivalent combination of education and experience

 - Outreach, public relations, marketing, or sales experience, especially within an academic or publishing environment

 - Strategic understanding of the role of digital repositories in an academic environment and the challenges of acquiring and displaying content

 - Familiarity of one or more major descriptive metadata standards: Dublin Core, EAD, METS, MIX, MODS, PBCore, PREMIS, or others

 - Excellent organizational skills with aptitude for and evidence of complex analytical and detailed work and commitment to quality assurance and quality control

 - Demonstrated ability to plan, initiate, and implement effective programs, projects, and services

 - Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills

 - Ability to work enthusiastically independently, as well as collaboratively, in a rapidly changing environment

 - Excellent understanding of copyright and permissions issues, including good familiarity with SHERPA/RoMEO

 Desirable additional skills:

 - Technical familiarity with the Fedora repository platform

 - Working knowledge of metadata standards and schemas

 - Familiarity with bibliographic or other online input systems and current digital library technologies, standards, and best practices

 - Experience managing technology-intensive projects in a collaborative work environment

 - Experience working with faculty in a university environment

 - Familiarity with one or more of the following: XML, UNIX, database design and development, scripting languages such as PHP, Web-authoring tools, and Web page development
