Information Technology Specialist (software developer) Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA As a member of the Astrophysics Data Systems (ADS) project, you will be part of a team working to design, develop, implement and maintain the project's IT infrastructure, and will help plan, specify, and build the technologies needed to support the project's goal of ubiquitous access to the astronomical literature and related datasets. As ADS is currently transitioning to an open-source digital library system, your initial primary focus will be the integration and customization of its two main components: Invenio (for metadata management and curation) and SOLR (for indexing and searching). The ideal candidate is a software developer with experience and knowledge of: Java, Python, SQL and Linux; database management systems; XML, XML transformation tools, and web standards; metadata standards and protocols in use in the Digital Library community; Information Retrieval and Information Extraction principles and practices. The ADS maintains a bibliographic database of over 9 million records and a fulltext archive of over 1.5 million scholarly papers. More information about the ADS and its services is available at http://ads.harvard.edu and http://adslabs.org The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory is part of what is arguably the largest and most diverse astrophysical institution in the world, the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). CfA staff carries out a broad program of research in astronomy, astrophysics, and earth and space sciences.
