Hi John, this is an interesting example. 

To add to the story..

Two years ago, the UMI School of Information web archiving class decided to capture the Ann Arbor News since, as you said, it was closing it's doors.
This content was something near and dear to these students and they were extremely motivated to ensure it was saved.
They used Archive-It for a limited period of time and did a great job. However, the class ended and although we tried to keep the collection and crawling active, there was 
no structure in place to do so and so eventually crawling stopped and the collection sunk to the bottom of the pile. 

The clearinghouse might be the structure that we need to enable long term and sustainable collection activity.
