The National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) seeks a scientific application developer as a member of our Informatics team. NESCent is an NSF-funded research center dedicated to cross-disciplinary research in evolutionary science. The Informatics team at NESCent, in collaboration with domain scientists, develops new methods for assembly, analysis, visualization and sharing of heterogeneous data types in evolutionary biology. We are committed to open data, open source software and to expanding the user and developer communities in evolutionary informatics. The developer will be an employee of Duke University, and be entitled to Duke's generous benefits. This position is split approximately equally between direct support of NESCent resident / visiting scholars and externally-funded projects, primarily Dryad. Dryad is a rapidly growing disciplinary data archive for the basic and applied biosciences that fills a critical need: disseminating the data underlying results reported in the scientific literature, thereby enabling validation and reuse by other researchers and educators. The job responsibilities of this position are quite diverse. For NESCent- sponsored science, these will include designing data models, architecting and implementing server-side middleware, developing service-oriented APIs, and consulting on best practices in data management, manipulation, and processing workflows. In the context of Dryad, areas of focus will include automated metadata processing, format migration and preservation assurance, integration with journal manuscript submission systems, enhancements to the deposition interface, and improved machine access to repository contents. The developer will work within the Center's informatics team, alongside other software developers and system support staff, and also collaborate directly with visiting / resident scientists and Center staff. Responsibilities will include software development (50%), documentation of requirements and new features (25%) and technical research (25%). Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Required: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Computer Science, Information and Library Sciences, or a related field. Enthusiasm for using technology to advance the culture and ease of archiving, sharing, and reusing scientific data. Experience with a Java and XML-based web-application technology stack with a relational database backend. Familiarity with Linux. Our team is diverse and includes technical and non-technical individuals, and therefore a demonstrated ability to communicate with both and to work in a team is also required. Preferred: Masters or Ph.D. degree with two or more years of professional software development experience. Experience with some of all of the following: web services, semantic web technologies, digital libraries technologies, open- source and collaborative software development, requirements gathering and scientific data integration. To apply: Please send a CV and cover letter to Dr. Karen Cranston, Informatics Project Manager ([log in to unmask]). Informal inquiries welcome.
