Under the direction of the Assistant Director, E-Resources + Serials (ER+S),
serve as one of the leaders that comprise the ER+S management team. The
mission of ER+S is to work together as a collaborative, service-oriented team
that strives to ensure students, faculty, and staff have consistent access to
the broad range of research publications provided through the University
Libraries. The ER+S: Cataloging Unit Head performs cataloging of serials in
all formats, languages, subjects, and levels of difficulty; works closely with
the other heads in the E-Resources + Serials and the Cataloging and Metadata
Department to manage the bibliographic control of both electronic and print
serials, licensed and continuing resources; supervises support staff and
assists the same in problem solving; evaluates and disseminates information on
innovations and emerging technologies concerning access to electronic
resources and serials; explores trends and develops procedures for the use of
non-MARC metadata; consults widely to provide effective access to electronic
resources and serials for a diverse clientele; and provides leadership by
representing the library in local and national organizations relating to
electronic resources and serials.

  
Duties:

  
Required: Master's degree in Library & Information Science from a program
accredited by the American Library Association or the equivalent in skills and
experience. Three to five years of supervisory experience and ability to work
effectively with individuals and groups within a large organization required;
experience within a combined union and non-union staffing environment strongly
desirable. Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, set performance
expectations, establish and implement efficient workflows, achieve goals,
create and expose documentation and direct work in a high-production setting.

  
Demonstrated functional knowledge of current cataloging practices such as such
as AACR2, LCSH, LC Classification, forthcoming changes with RDA and MARC and
an understanding of the principles of authority control. Experience with an
integrated library system and bibliographic utilities. Demonstrated
receptiveness to and understanding of emerging information technologies.
Appropriate professional qualifications include excellent communication and
interpersonal skills, collegiality, and initiative. Attention to detail,
excellent organizational skills, proven problem solving ability, and ability
to flourish in a high-intensity work environment. Demonstrated initiative in
fostering new ideas and in implementing change. Public service orientation;
ability to interact with students, faculty and staff in a courteous,
professional, and collegial manner and to embrace the diversity of the
Libraries' users and staff.

  
Preferred: Knowledge of trends in information access pertaining to libraries,
and metadata librarianship. Experience with CONSER cataloging standards.
Working knowledge or experience with non-MARC metadata standards and schemas,
such as Dublin Core, EAD, MODS, METS, OAI, TEI, XML, Darwin Core, and VRA
Core. Experience providing metadata/cataloging services, preferably within an
academic or research library setting. Experience within a combined union and
non-union staffing environment. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and
understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the
workplace. Knowledge of MARC Edit, Perl, PHP, and XSLT. Successful project
management experience.
