Job Purpose

To contribute to an RCUK-funded project - Copyright and Risk: Scoping the
Wellcome Digital Library Programme - by undertaking a scoping study that
establishes the scale and nature of copyright issues in the digitisation of
archival collections. Uncertainty over the copyright status of archival
material is a major barrier to digitisation and the exploitation of these
collections for research and commercial purposes.

Specifically, this project will assess and report upon the implications of
adopting a risk-based approach to copyright compliance within a large-scale,
multi-partner digitisation initiative. By conducting in-depth interviews with
key personnel involved in the establishment of the Wellcome Digital Library
programme, as well as an analysis of other cognate digitisation projects, you
will make a significant contribution to advancing understanding of the
copyright problem for archival digitisation. By contributing to the project's
dissemination activities you will help set the agenda in this field for
researchers and practitioners alike.

The outcome of this research will help inform a competitive PhD Scholarship
from Oct 2013 for which the successful candidate would be eligible to apply.
