GIS Services Specialist
Texas State University
San Marcos

The University Library at Texas State University is seeking qualified
applicants for the position of GIS Services Specialist. This position directs
the library's GIS support services and resources offered to the Texas State
University community.
The position oversees the Alkek Library GIS lab, including research
assistance, statistical and geospatial software support, and instruction.

  
**RESPONSIBILITIES:** Provide support for GIS data-related coursework, research, and teaching. Ensure consistent staffing of GIS lab. Assist researchers with numerous data needs including: locating and accessing data sets; using GIS, digital design, and statistical software; converting data to other formats; generating maps, images, and other geographical products; providing guidance on data management. Provide public service to library patrons via in-person consultation, chat, phone, and email. Plan, develop, and provide workshops and classes for finding, using, and creating GIS products. Provide instruction and conduct tours for patrons in the use of materials in Government Information and the general library. Maintain and build the University Library's access to spatial data, including openly accessible online datasets and commercial products. Ensure that GIS lab computer workstations, printers, and software are updated and in working order. Partner with appropriate depar!
 tments to increase curation of spatial data. Under direction of the Specialized Collections Librarian, guides and develops the future of services and resources in the GIS lab in the library. Develop and maintain knowledge of trends in GIS data and library services. Coordinate marketing, outreach and public relations of the University Library's GIS services to the Texas State University community. Manage assigned special projects. Engage in appropriate professional development activities.  
  
**QUALIFICATIONS:**  
  
**Required:** Ability to use geospatial software, spreadsheet, statistical, digital design, and word processing programs; knowledge of cartographic information resources; ability to identify data needs and appropriate resources to meet needs; ability to understand, interpret and retain complex technical materials; strong oral and written communication skills conducted in an effective and pleasant manner, including the ability to communicate with other library staff and with patrons who are seeking assistance (by phone, email, chat, or in person); ability to instruct within a traditional classroom environment, as well as in electronic classroom settings, web based, and course integrated environments; master's degree or higher in Geographic Information Systems or comparable degree, such as Geography or Urban Planning, with a concentration in GIS, or master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.  
  
**Preferred:** Statistical skills to effectively provide GIS support; knowledge of library online information resources including bibliographic and full-text databases, and library online catalogs; familiarity with chat software; ability to create, refine, manage, and assess new and existing programs, services, and products; familiarity with data management best practices; ability to identify appropriate materials and software, in various formats, to add to the library collection; programing language such as Python or PHP.  
  
**SALARY AND BENEFITS:** Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits include monthly contribution to health insurance/benefits package and retirement program. No state or local income tax.
