The University of Michigan Library<http://www.lib.umich.edu/> in Ann Arbor is one of the largest university library systems in the United States, holding more than 8.5 million print volumes. Each year, the University Library with locations across the Ann Arbor campus, adds the equivalent of 2 miles of new material to one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of any academic library in the world. Our seminal role in digitization enabled the creation of HathiTrust, a coalition of over 80 libraries with a growing digital collection that currently exceeds 11 million volumes.

The User Experience (UX) Department at the University of Michigan Library is seeking a talented and enthusiastic User Experience Architect to support a large-scale initiative to redesign the library's web presence. The ideal candidate will be a strong creative thinker and problem solver, and have solid information architecture skills, interaction design skills, and a passion for understanding users in the context of higher education. The User Experience Architect works closely with UX Department staff (Department Manager, UI/UX Designer, and Web Content Strategist) plus developers and internal stakeholders.

About the UX Department: the UX Department is part of the Library Information Technology Division (LIT) and focuses on the interface design, user research/usability, and content strategy needs for the library's primary interfaces - including multiple websites, access systems, and mobile interfaces. These interfaces provide access to over 10 million physical and digital resources and are visited by over 2 million users a month. Responsibilities*

  *   Gather requirements by consulting stakeholders, investigating user needs and assessing current interfaces.
  *   Develop personas, use cases, user journeys, etc. to support the design process.
  *   Conceptualize and design the information architecture and contribute to the overall site design, navigation, and functionality.
  *   Contribute to project management, project documentation, functional specifications, and quality assurance reviews.
  *   Conduct ongoing research to identify new design trends and UX strategies.
  *   Communicate with internal stakeholders throughout the life cycle of projects.

Required Qualifications*

  *   Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (information science, information design, graphic design, interaction design, HCI, or a related discipline) and at least 3 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. For optional appointment as a Librarian, an ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library or Information Science, or a relevant advanced degree is required
  *   Ability to translate complex requirements into simple interface interactions; solid understanding of how content, design, and IA work together to create an optimal user experience.
  *   Knowledge of best practices in information architecture, usability, user-centered design principles, and interaction design.
  *   Experience with UX strategies and deliverables (e.g., site maps, wireframes, prototypes, usability, card sorting, personas, use cases, interviews, observations, functional specifications, project documentation).
  *   Proficiency with at least one major graphics or prototyping application (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Axure, Omnigraffle, Visio).
  *   Excellent collaboration, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills; experience working with a diverse population to gather feedback, foster discussion, and document complex issues.
  *   Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize, and solve problems proactively.
  *   Ability to work well in a multicultural and collaborative environment

Desired Qualifications*

  *   Experience designing or evaluating library websites or other complex, data-rich websites.
  *   Experience designing or evaluating responsive or mobile interfaces.
  *   Familiarity with designing or developing web accessibility compliant websites (e.g., universal design principles, accessibility coding standards, validation tools, and evaluation techniques).
  *   Experience with Google Analytics, SEO, HTML/CSS, writing for the web.

Appointment is anticipated at the level of Web Designer/Administrator Senior or as a librarian. Librarian salary and rank dependent on the candidate's qualifications and experience. Position receives 24 days of vacation a year and 15 days of sick leave a year with provisions for extended benefits as well as opportunities for professional development and travel. TIAA-CREF and Fidelity Investments retirement options available.
