Digital Archivist
College of William & Mary

The digital archivist will lead efforts to acquire, preserve, describe, and
provide access to born-digital and digitized archival and special collections
materials. The successful person will oversee the transfer of digital
materials from a variety of current or legacy media formats such as tape,
floppy disks, CDs, and hard drives and will implement mechanisms for ensuring
access to this material. The digital archivist will work closely with the
University Archivist to develop processes for the routine acquisition,
preservation, and access of born-digital materials created by the College of
William & Mary, including email, Web sites, social media, and other digital
primary materials. The digital archivist will be responsible for digital
program development, including providing vision and support for SCRC's online
presence and working collaboratively with library-wide digital initiatives.
This includes oversight of SCRC's collection management system and digital
archive. This also includes working with library liaisons to develop ways to
better incorporate digital collections into instruction. The digital archivist
will be expected to collaborate with campus technology partners in order to
develop a comprehensive digital preservation plan for SCRC. He/she will serve
as an expert in assessing preservation and access needs for digital content
and will work collaboratively with Swem Library Technology and W&M Campus IT
to implement appropriate tools and procedures to fulfill data needs.
Supervision of students, volunteers, and interns is required. Reference and
instruction assistance will be required on an as-needed basis.

  
This is a restricted position and continued employment is dependent on
funding.

  
Required Qualifications

  * Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Science, or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program (or its foreign equivalent) with an emphasis in archives and digital projects.
  * Experience working with digital content in a special collections or archives setting;
  * Experience in using an archival management system (Archon, Archivists' Toolkit, ArchivesSpace);
  * Demonstrated knowledge of current trends, tools, and protocols in digital archiving and preservation;
  * Understanding of principles and techniques for archiving of websites, email, social media, and other online primary sources;
  * Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively;
  * Excellent organizational skills and ability to plan, coordinate, and implement complex projects; Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications

  * Prior experience working in an academic research library, ideally in an academic archives;
  * Experience with managing digital asset management systems;
  * Understanding of principles of database management, enterprise architecture, and systems analysis;
  * Familiarity with digital forensics tools and workflows;
  * Understanding of scripting languages (XSLT, Java, Python, Ruby, PHP, etc.).
