Metadata Librarian

This position provides organization and bibliographic
control of library resources in all formats and all encoding levels. The
incumbent reports to the Head of Access and Discovery and will help chart the
library's long-range plans for cataloging collections, supporting digital
initiatives and ILS data remediation.

  
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs original, copy, and adaptive cataloging in all formats in
accordance of RDA standards and supports digital initiatives in metadata
description and record customization.

2. Performs bulk import and authority control, and maintains quality control
of data, troubleshoots collection access and discovery related issues, and
creates customized SQL reports

3. Develops and coordinates best practices in providing a general approach to
metadata works to ensure interoperability and sustainability of metadata in
bibliographic systems within the library and contributes to the development,
implementation, and evaluation of metadata and cataloging policies, and
procedures for the library and the institutional repository

4. Assists and/or manages special cataloging or metadata projects undertaken
by the Department as assigned by the Department Head. May lead project staff
to create descriptive metadata for these projects and for Open Access
contributions to the UTA institutional repository

5. Participates in cross functional campus or Library teams and participates
in professional growth activities

6. May hire, train, and supervise student workers to perform preliminary
description activities and other duties as assigned.

  
REQUIRED EDUCATION:

• An MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA accredited institution at the time
of appointment is required

  
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience in cataloging, subject analysis, and authority control

• Knowledge of current and emerging metadata standards and practices including
RDA and FRBR

• Experience with MARC and non-MARC metadata schema, including RDA, Dublin
Core, EAD, MARCXML and etc.

• Knowledge of XML

• Proficiency in understanding data structures and developing SQL queries

• Proficiency with one or more of the following languages: Perl, PHP, or
Python

• Demonstrated organizational, analytical, decision-making, problem-solving
and planning skills

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and work
effectively in a team environment

• Strong commitment to service.

  
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience with an ILS - preferably Voyager

• Experience with record customization and import en masse

• Knowledge of digital repository systems - preferably DSpace

  
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of MARC21 and/or non-MARC metadata schemas

• Knowledge of Microsoft Access and SQL

• Proficiency with one or more of the following languages: Perl, PHP, or
Python

  
WORKING CONDITIONS:

General office conditions. Specific job requirements or physical location of
positions allocated to this classification render the position security
sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas
Education Code.
