The Library of the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW) at New York University seeks an energetic and creative librarian to help manage its growing print and electronic collections and to develop its nascent public services. The ISAW Library’s mission is to build and maintain a world-class research library that supports both the core academic areas represented by the ISAW faculty as well as the interdisciplinary, cross-boundary approach to the ancient world for which ISAW is known. The ISAW Library also seeks to provide access to and support for new forms of digital scholarship, scholarly communication, and pedagogy in the ancient studies. As a key member of the ISAW Library team, the Librarian for Collections and Services will work with a diverse group of academic professionals at ISAW and the NYU Division of Libraries not only to manage its existing collections and to support its current digital projects, but also to help shape and execute the ISAW Library’s longer-term strategic goals and initiatives as it pursues this mission.

 

The Librarian for Collections and Services is a full-time, tenure-tenure track faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Curator and reports to the ISAW Head Librarian.

 

Under the supervision of the Head Librarian the ISAW Librarian for Collection and Services will:

• Work with the Head Librarian and other ISAW Library staff to manage the collections and operations of the ISAW Library, including workflows for acquisitions, circulation, course reserves, offsite, and scanning delivery services through NYU Interlibrary loan (ILIAD)
• Perform original and complex copy cataloging for all formats in a wide range of subjects and languages using the Ex Libris Aleph client and otherwise generally ensure accurate and timely maintenance of print and digital records through compliance with national and local standards such as MARC, AACR2, RDA, LCSH, LCCS, NACO, CONSER, and LC cataloging practices, as well as other appropriate cataloging and metadata standards
• Work with the Head Librarian to plan, design, and provide high-quality and relevant public services and instruction for the ISAW community
• Serve as a liaison to faculty, graduate students, and other patrons; and respond to written, telephone, and email reference questions
• Train and manage student workers, interns, and adjunct librarians as necessary
• Provide support for the ISAW Library’s digital projects and initiatives
• Participate in the ISAW Library’s outreach efforts and support its public programming

 

Qualifications:

 

Required:

• ALA-accredited MLS and second subject Master’s degree required for tenure
• Familiarity with current trends in technical services
• Familiarity in resource description and authority control using national cataloging standards, principles, and identifier schemas
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• The ability to use a full range of text and electronic resources in history, archaeology, art history and other areas relevant to ISAW’s core research areas
• Minimum four years relevant professional experience

 

Preferred:

• Subject area background relevant to the areas of study at ISAW
• Experience with digital libraries
• Awareness of cross-disciplinary issues in librarianship
• Working knowledge of a non-Western language, with a strong preference for Chinese or Russian

The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World:

The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World is a unique center for advanced scholarly research and graduate education, offering the Ph.D. degree through NYU’s Graduate School of Arts and Science. It has a wider geographic span than other programs that focus on the ancient world, incorporating not only Europe and the entire Mediterranean basin, but also the Near East, and Central, South, and East Asia. In its research and its teaching of doctoral students, ISAW emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach, one that transcends modern boundaries of nation. It supports scholarship that crosses customary disciplinary boundaries – art history, literature, archaeology, history, geography, geology, economics, and sociology, among others – to create a new intellectual framework for understanding the ancient world, and to train a new generation of scholars steeped in that integrated approach.
