Visiting Assistant Professor: Scholarly Communication & Publishing Services

The Pacific University Libraries invites applications for a visiting assistant professor 18-month replacement position beginning January 1, 2015. Candidates with strong backgrounds in scholarly publishing or library publishing services, or with relevant demonstrated abilities, are encouraged to apply.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
This position provides direction for the Libraries’ scholarly communication services, with an emphasis on collaborative leadership that engages faculty, staff, and students in initiatives that maximize the dissemination, preservation, and impact of the university’s scholarship and research; manages the Library’s institutional repository and publishing services, including the Pacific University Press; and provides education to the campus community regarding scholarly communication and intellectual property issues. This is a full-time faculty position on an 18-month term contract.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  *   Lead the organization and management of CommonKnowledge, Pacific’s institutional repository (http://commons.pacificu.edu)
  *   Recruit and select unique locally-created (by Pacific students, staff, or faculty) content for dissemination through CommonKnowledge
  *   Provide direct support for journals published by the Libraries; this may include (but is not limited to) training for student and faculty editors, technical support for publications, layout/design support for publications, and coordination of metadata/journal deposits with CrossRef, Portico, and journal aggregators
  *   Provide direct support for books published by the Libraries under its Bee Tree Books imprint; this may include (but is not limited to) working with authors to secure third-party permissions, layout/design support for publications, and coordination of file delivery to print-on-demand vendors
  *   Serve as Associate Press Director for the Pacific University Press (3-4 titles anticipated during contract period); this may include (but is not limited to) recruiting and supporting Acquisition Team members; working with the Acquisition Teams and authors to complete book proposals; coordinating the peer review process for manuscripts; coordinating the editorial process for manuscripts; and managing the final editing, design, and production stages (including coordinating the permissions and legal review processes)
  *   Act as the liaison between various campus entities that have a stake in the repository and publishing services, including the library, faculty, administration, University Information Services, and students
  *   Hire and train student workers, as needed, to assist with the repository and with publishing services
  *   Design and provide instruction and resources for students, staff, and faculty related to scholarly communication topics (open access, intellectual property, copyright, publishing practices, author rights, etc.)
  *   Serve as a liaison with the University’s Office of Scholarship and Sponsored Projects; coordinate collaborative initiatives between the Library and the Office of Research that support the scholarly and research activities of the University community

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & BEHAVIORS:

  *   MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program orsignificant relevant professional experience in either an academic library or a publishing company
  *   Familiarity with current trends and emerging issues regarding copyright, open access, and scholarly communication, particularly as they relate to publishing and/or institutional repositories
  *   Basic knowledge of legal and ethical issues relevant to publishers (e.g. copyright, privacy, libel, research ethics)
  *   Basic knowledge of publishing practices and processes for scholarly journals and/or monographs (i.e. review, editorial, production processes)
  *   Basic knowledge of digital repository platforms (experience with Digital Commons preferred)
  *   Demonstrated ability to efficiently learn/adapt to  new computer systems/software
  *   Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, XML, and XSLT
  *   Experience with desktop publishing programs (Adobe InDesign preferred)
  *   Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff, both independently and in a team environment
  *   Ability to plan, develop, and manage projects
  *   Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  *   Potential for success working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Academic library environment, some evening and weekend hours. This job is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Classification:
Faculty, exempt, non-tenure track, full-time, 18 month contract
