Digital Archivist

The Hoover Institution Archives is seeking a Digital Archivist to carry out
full range of archival functions on born-digital materials according to
archival standards and best practices. The full-time position is for a career
track with a limited term of two years.

  
JOB PURPOSE:

  
Reporting to the Digital Materials Manager, the Digital Archivist processes
born-digital archival materials, helps develop a variety of digital workflows
according to archival standards and methods, and supports the full range of
functions of the digital curation and imaging lab.

  
CORE DUTIES:

  * Develop and implement plans to assess, process, describe, preserve, and provide access to born-digital collection materials, coordinating with other units as appropriate.
  * Assist in determining policies and procedures for the curation of born-digital collection materials according to archival standards and methods that are scalable.
  * Create metadata and ingest metadata/digital objects into Hoover's digital preservation environment.
  * Support digital imaging projects, including developing plans and workflows, creating time and cost estimates, coordinating the work of digitization production staff, performing quality assurance, and performing digital imaging work.
  * Prepare and maintain a variety of documentation of projects, workflows, and procedures.
  * Disseminate information about newly available digital materials via a variety of communication platforms.
  * Contribute to the ongoing development and review of technologies and their application to digital archival materials.
  * Assist in selecting, configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting hardware and software used for projects.
  * Maintain production statistics.
  * Identify and collaborate with partners within the Library & Archives and beyond.
Qualifications:

  
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  
Education & Experience:

M.L.I.S. degree from an A.L.A.-accredited library school, and at least 2 years
of experience working in archives or special collections. Demonstrated
experience with database systems used for archival work.

  
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  * Demonstrated knowledge of archival description and metadata standards for both physical and digital collection materials.
  * Competence with current hardware and software used to process and describe born-digital archival materials and digitize paper-based materials.
  * Excellent technical skills spanning a variety of obsolete, obscure, and non-US hardware and software systems, including Windows, Mac, Wang, etc.
  * Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of people.
  * Effective problem solving, analytical and organizational skills.
  * Evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills.
  * Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a production-oriented environment.
  * Enthusiasm for innovation and change, and interest in keeping abreast of new developments.
  * Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages preferred.
