Metadata Technologies Librarian Ohio University Athens Position Announcement Metadata Technologies Librarian Ohio University Libraries seeks a dynamic and ambitious individual for the position of Metadata Technologies Librarian. The successful candidate will be motivated by metadata challenges in a changing library landscape; will be energized by collaborative efforts; and will work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds. Reporting to the Head of Metadata Services, the Metadata Technologies Librarian is responsible for analysis, creation, enrichment, and transformation of metadata in MARC and non-MARC formats, while actively investigating post-MARC developments and applications, for library resources in all physical and digital formats, at all item and collection levels. Always looking to strategically utilize tools, techniques, automation, and current and emerging standards and schemas, this librarian actively pursues opportunities to innovate and provide solutions to metadata challenges. The position regularly collaborates with others inside and outside the department, participating in the development, application, and assessment of metadata policies and workflows. Responsibilities In support of Ohio University Libraries' efforts to enhance metadata in both user resource discovery and the preservation of digital information, the Metadata Technologies Librarian employs a solid understanding of current and emerging metadata principles and applications, critical thinking, and an eagerness to learn in engaging the position's duties, which include but are not limited to: • Create, revise, enrich, and adapt high quality descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata in both MARC and non-MARC formats for physical, digitized, and born-digital resources at the item- and collection-levels • Utilize technologies and tools, such as bulk editing, automation techniques, and programmatic methods, to create, remediate, enrich, and transform metadata, often in collaboration with other departments • Collaborate with colleagues inside and outside the department on the development, application, and assessment of policies and workflows, actively providing solutions and contributing to projects • Actively investigate post-MARC, linked data, and semantic web developments, tools, and standards, considering metadata capture, creation, and extension opportunities • Pursue regular professional development and engagement with the field through research, publications, presentations, participation in regional and national associations, and contributing to discussions and developments with library standards as continuing commitment to bring best practices and innovative services to Ohio University Libraries. Qualifications Required: • A Master's degree from an ALA-accredited institution • Demonstrated wide-ranging knowledge of metadata formats and standards (such as MARC, EAD, XML, and Dublin Core) • Demonstrated knowledge of metadata standards and schemas (such as RDA and LCSH) • Demonstrated understanding of controlled vocabularies and authority control • Familiarity with metadata work associated with digital collections and repository platforms, such as cross-walking metadata and data conversion • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively Preferred: • Demonstrated experience with MARC and non-MARC metadata in an academic/research library environment • Familiarity with or initiative to learn the emerging applications of linked data and semantic web concepts (such as BIBFRAME, RDF, schema.org) • Demonstrated skills with or initiative to learn tools and techniques for data/metadata manipulation and automation (such as OpenRefine, Excel, Google Sheets, Python, XSLT, etc.) • Experience using Innovative Interfaces Sierra, OCLC Connexion, CONTENTdm, Omeka Established in 1804, Ohio University is a comprehensive, state-assisted institution classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research University (high research activity).
