Let's talk about representations of information professionals--both positive and negative--in pop culture. I get such a kick out them. Like that two-minute sequence in a ninety-minute action film where the plot is on hold because some obscure bit of information is locked away in a dusty basement collection? Chances are, that was my favorite part of the movie.
I've also encountered a lot of them in video games, which is delightful. Obviously, when the opportunity arose, I joined the Mage's Guild in Elder Scrolls just so I could gallop around the countryside collecting tomes for the libraries of Tamriel. And I wanted about three more hours of the storyline involving the wise Archivist spirit in Dragon Age: Inquisition. If you're ever playing and you come across a cool character, I'd love it if you shared screenshots of them with me on Twitter. I'll be posting a couple of my favorites later today.
Now that we've talked all about fictional jobs, here are some real-life ones you can apply for:
- The University of Texas Libraries at UT Austin are seeking a Continuing Resources Acquisitions Coordinator. Duties will include ordering, activation, payment, and maintenance of continuing resources in all formats.
- UC Santa Cruz is accepting applications for the position of Digital Humanities Librarian. The Digital Humanities Librarian will work in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Arts divisions of the school's Digital Scholarship Commons, collaborating on established digital projects and fostering the development of new research projects.
- The Digital Initiatives Librarian at The Atlanta University Center's Robert W. Woodruff Library will support the development, implementation and use of emerging technologies at the library (including managing scanning and digitization activities!).
- The role of Electronics Records Archivist at the University of Maryland will involve leading the development of strategies and services for managing and preserving electronic records. The person in this role will be critical in developing the capacity for Special Collections and University Archives to acquire, preserve and provide access to born-digital materials
- Finally, a reminder that CLIR has multiple Post-Doctoral Fellowships open to applicants right now. These one- to two-year positions are for recent Ph.D. graduates from any discipline. Please pass them on to any eligible individuals you may know!
Fellowships in Academic Libraries are available at Bryn Mawr College, Carnegie Mellon University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Georgia State University, Iowa State University, Johns Hopkins University, and Smith College.
Fellowships in Data Curation for Latin American and Carribean Studies are hosted by Haverford College, Indiana University, University of Florida, University of Houston, and University of Texas at Austin.
Fellowships in Data Curation for the Sciences and Social Sciences are hosted at Carnegie Mellon University.
