Hi Folks!

Not sure this is a great fit for code4lib, but thought to bring this
session at the fall AGU meeting to your attention, as there are many folks
on this list that have probably thought about these problems and might
provide a fresh perspective on effective data management that my earth
science colleagues could benefit from. In general earth science has both
unstructured and structured datasets, but we continue to struggle with
effective archiving, discovery and reproducible use of some of these
(think: hours and hours of scientific dive video from robots voyaging to
the deep sea, sitting on a shelf!)

YMMV, but thought this might be of interest --- help us do this better!

Best,
Christian

Subject: Call for Abstracts: AGU 2017 Session on Maximizing data value for
data centers and managers
To: [log in to unmask]

Dear Colleagues,
We would like to remind you and to encourage you to submit an abstract
<https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm17/in/papers/index.cgi?sessionid=26276> to
the session: *IN042: **Maximizing data value for data centers and data
managers: Experiences, strategies, lessons learned, and recommendations by
the Aug. 2, 2017 deadline.*

*Description*: The growing volume of disparate scientific datasets, complex
scientific questions, and difficult societal problems, coupled with limited
financial support for data needs, makes business challenging for data
centers and data managers. These entities add value to data through
investments in documentation, accessibility, and services. Yet, data
centers and data managers need guidance to best allocate limited resources
and to demonstrate to stakeholders the overall value provided.

This session invites abstracts around issues like:

Which curation practices are ‘worthwhile’? Which, if any, are not?

How can the quality or maturity of data management, curation,
documentation, services, etc., be measured? What metrics or guidelines
exist or could be developed for evaluating these aspects?

When is it worthwhile to invest in automation?

How can societal benefits be quantified, e.g. in education, public
planning, safety, and scientific knowledge?

What would a framework to evaluate the return on investment in data
curation look like?
*Conveners*: Nancy A Ritchey, NOAA/NESDIS/National Centers for
Environmental Information, Stephen M Richard, Columbia University of New
York, Lamont -Doherty Earth Observatory, Anne Wilson, Laboratory for
Atmospheric and Space Physics, and Ilya Zaslavsky, San Diego Supercomputer
Center, Spatial Information Systems Lab,

Looking forward to your contribution.

On behalf of the conveners,
Nancy Ritchey
