The first half of this two-part webinar program (scheduled for November 1)
will provide an overview of the current landscape of options available to
academic institutions for ensuring and streamlining access to materials by
legitimate users. What’s working, which technological approaches may be
outdated, and what needs to be done (research, technology upgrades, etc.)
to resolve related problems?

*November 1 (Part One): *Engineering Access Under the Hood: Challenges of
Identity and Authentication Management
<http://www.niso.org/news/events/2017/webinars/nov1_webinar/>

*What Our Speakers Will Be Addressing: *

*Content Anytime / Anywhere - Challenges in serving today’s mobile user
Judy Luther*, *President, Informed Strategies*

*Abstract:* IP access is still considered the “norm” today for providing
the academic community access to the content that libraries acquire.
However, user requirements have changed in a highly mobile world. Libraries
need more intelligent data for budget and service applications. And privacy
is increasingly of concern in our digital environment. In the context of
identity and authentication management, what’s the impact of these changes?

*Transforming the user experience with identity management and SSO*

*Speaker:* *Phil Leahy*, *Services Relationship Manager, Eduserv*

*Abstract: *Access to online information resources is vital for both
students and faculty. Universities, colleges, and other institutions have
made significant investments in e-resources, but frustrations around access
can impede their usage among those who benefit from them the most.
Subscription arrangements typically require that the institution or library
will want to use their membership database to provide access to these
resources, but IP recognition simply doesn’t work in these situations, and
peer-to-peer SAML connections are too complex. This webinar will discuss
the problems with both approaches, how the UK and US academic sectors are
dealing with these challenges in different ways and what the future
landscape of authentication might look like.

*A Provider’s Perspective on Identity and Authentication Management*

*Speakers:* *Ellen Rotenberg, **Director, Product Management, Platform
Capabilities and Services*, *Clarivate Analytics*, *and* *Rick
Stevenson*, *Manager,
Tech Operations*, *Clarivate Analytics*.

*Abstract: *Clarivate Analytics is the global leader in providing research,
discovery, and analytics applications to the research ecosystem, including
the world’s top universities, corporations, governments, and individuals.
We support a variety of identity and authentication models—from anonymous
access to named-user based approaches—depending on the market, product, and
customer needs. In our experience, organizations find Single sign-on (SSO)
the most desired authentication model, which comes with technical
challenges on both the customer and provider side.

During the webinar, we will provide an overview of our experience in
working with academic, and corporate customers, the common issues in SSO
implementations, as well as some suggestions for areas of improvement
between service providers and clients. We will also share lessons learned
on balancing security and privacy concerns with ease of use and
personalized user experience.

*November 15 (Part Two):* Engineering Access Under the Hood: Enhancing &
Harmonizing Metadata for Discovery & Use
<http://www.niso.org/news/events/2017/webinars/nov15_webinar/>

The second half of this webinar (scheduled for November 15) will provide an
overview of the issues associated with delivering quality metadata by and
to various stakeholders. Based on comments heard at conferences and in
meetings, it’s an old issue. But what are the existing barriers to
delivering reliable metadata? What improvements might be made in the
process? What stands in the way of successful implementation?

*Confirmed Speakers: Patricia Payton*, *Senior Manager, Provider Relations,
Proquest/Bowker*; *Scott Anderson*, *Associate Professor & Information
Systems Librarian, Millersville University*; *Marilyn White*, *E-Resource
Librarian, **Briget Wynne,** Reference and Interlibrary Loan Librarian, *
*and* *Katelynd Bucher, **Metadata Librarian, Research Library
Group, National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST)*.
