The University of Arkansas, a Research 1 institution and the flagship campus for the state, is seeking its next Dean of University Libraries. The successful candidate will be a highly experienced and nationally engaged leader who will develop an enhanced vision for providing interdisciplinary and innovative scholarship support for the campus, in alignment with the University of Arkansas’ guiding priorities and mission as a public land-grant institution. Integral to this vision is the renewal of Mullins Library, the 230,000-square-foot core research library, for the campus. The first of two construction phases will be completed in July 2021, with program planning for the second phase to begin shortly thereafter.

 

Together with the administrative team, the Dean will establish clear priorities for the University Libraries’ external and internal functions; supervise recruitment and retention of top-level faculty and staff; oversee all budgetary concerns, including managing the distribution of assets from more than $50 million of endowed funds; advocate strongly for the University Libraries on campus and within the state; and serve as the chief fundraiser for the unit.

 

The Dean will foster collaborative relations within the university community and espouse a personal commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Collaboration with University system libraries and libraries throughout the region to maximize cooperative resource sharing is a high priority, as is enhancing relationships and collaboration with historical societies, regional public libraries, and nationally recognized museums.

 

The Dean’s administrative team is made up of division leaders from across the University Libraries and comprises an associate dean for content and digital initiatives, associate dean for research and learning, associate dean for Special Collections, and assistant dean for finance and administration. A full-time assistant, director of development, development coordinator, and director of public relations complete the Dean’s executive office.

 

Responsibilities of this position also include research, creative work, and service in keeping with the faculty requirements of the University of Arkansas. The successful candidate must have demonstrated accomplishments in performance, scholarly activity, and professional service to meet criteria for appointment with tenure at the level of Librarian/Professor. A dossier will be required for hiring.

 

This position reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs – Charles Robinson – and serves on the Academic Deans Group, the Provost's Executive Council, and the Chancellor’s Administrative Policy Council. The Dean of Libraries provides visionary, strategic, intellectual, and operational leadership for the more than 120 faculty and professional staff who work throughout the main research library, three on-campus branch libraries, and two library annex facilities.
