Schaffer Library at Union College seeks a Data & GIS Librarian to provide expertise in the areas of data and geospatial methods, supporting students, faculty, and staff in the discovery, creation, visualization, and dissemination of a wide variety of research data. As a member of Research Services, the Librarian will join a team dedicated to the full spectrum of student and faculty research, bringing a unique data perspective to broader instruction, research services, and digital scholarship programs.

The Librarian will work closely with library and campus partners to support and advise faculty and student researchers on emerging data trends, sustainable workflows, and best practices to ensure the discoverability, accessibility, and reproducibility of their datasets and mapping projects.

As data methods and research continues to grow on campus, the Data & GIS Librarian will apply data and geospatial expertise to provide project consultations, teach workshops and course sections, and partner with faculty to support and teach essential data methods and research skills. The Librarian will also devise innovative programming to build and support critical data literacy in disciplines across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences using open data and resources in Union College’s collections.

As a member of the general faculty of Union College, the Data & GIS Librarian will also be expected to pursue a focused program of professional development, scholarly activity, and service.

Qualifications: 

Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program.
Minimum of two years working in the field of data instruction and research required.
An equivalent combination of degree and experience will be considered.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the data/geospatial research lifecycles, especially for the humanities and social sciences.
Demonstrated knowledge of learner-centered pedagogy and best practices in library instruction and information literacy at the college level. 
Demonstrated understanding of emerging data resources and trends, such as open data and data ethics. 
Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
Ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a team environment.

Responsibilities:  

Support student researchers at each stage of research as they discover, create, visualize, and disseminate research datasets through workshops, consultations, help tickets, and office hours. 
Support and partner with faculty to integrate data methods and emerging data infrastructure into their research and teaching.
Collaborate with Research Services department and Digital Scholarship Initiatives team to develop and integrate data literacy program and resources into library instruction.
Participate in programs and services of the Digital Scholarship and Public Services division including general research consultations, student instruction, and faculty development, and serve as point of contact for data-related inquiries.
Identify and collaborate with appropriate campus partners, including faculty, on data-related curricular and co-curricular programs and policies.
Supervise student consultants and researchers working in data-related fields.
Collaborate with Content and Digital Library Systems, Special Collections & Archives, and ITS on best practices for data capture, documentation, storage, and dissemination.
Stay current and up-to-date with library data collections and broader data policies and trends, including open data and emerging data resources. 
Contribute to campus committees and attend campus events to cultivate relationships supporting the library’s mission to enrich the overall academic experience.
Pursue a program of professional development, scholarly activity, and service to meet requirements of the position and promotion.
