Director for Research and Instruction

Reporting to the Associate Provost for Libraries and leading library staff working with faculty, researchers, and students, the Director will oversee initiatives and programs that connect library research and instructional services with the larger campus community. The Director of Research and Instruction (equivalent to an Associate Dean) will provide leadership in creating a vision for library engagement in the research lifecycle through publication, as well as classroom teaching and learning. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work effectively and collegially in teams, fostering innovation and creative problem solving. This administrative position will be based on the Glassboro campus and coordinate closely with the Director of User Services and Collections and partner with the Division of University Research. Rowan has four University Libraries: Campbell Library in Glassboro, Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford and Sewell, Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in Camden and forthcoming Rowan University School of Veterinary Medicine in Glassboro.

The primary areas of responsibilities include:

Leadership and Supervision:

The Director of Research and Instruction will advise, and support librarian faculty and staff members in their professional and scholarly activities. This will include guiding professional development for new librarians and providing mentorship to librarian faculty.

Reporting to the Director of Research and Instruction:
·  Research and Instruction Librarians in Glassboro
·  Scholarly Communications and Data Curation Librarian
·  Digital Scholarship Center Coordinator
·  Digital Asset Management Working Group
·  Rowan Digital Works (Institutional Repository) Manager

Faculty and Student Research Development:
·  Act as a Rowan University Libraries liaison on university-related matters connected to research and sponsored activities, such as the Associate Deans for Research in other Rowan colleges, the Office of the Vice President of Research, Office of Sponsored Projects, Rowan University Research Council, and Rowan’s Institutional Review Board.
·  Facilitate partnerships between librarians and faculty in the areas of research, scholarship, and teaching and learning
·  Develop and implement initiatives and processes that promote individual and collaborative research, scholarship and creative activity among librarians across Rowan University Libraries and campuses.
·  Support research initiatives of undergraduate & graduate students, teaching faculty, and university researchers.
·  Actively communicate the value Rowan University Libraries adds to the mission of the University
·  Identify strategies to acquire and support emerging research technologies
·  Foster a culture of research and scholarship and promote the value of scholarly communications.
·  Support staff serving as investigators on external grants to support Rowan University Libraries initiatives.
·  Participate in Research Data Management Working Group

Teaching and Learning:
·  Provide leadership for robust information literacy instruction program
·  Foster continued growth of online workshop offerings
·  Maintain awareness of emerging library technologies and pedagogical trends.

Scholarly Communications:

Provide leadership for scholarly publishing and communications.  This includes:
·  Open Education Resources
·  Open Access
·  Data management
·  Library-hosted Publishing Projects
·  Digital Humanities Projects
·  Collaborate with the Outreach Coordinator on innovative outreach programs and services to achieve library objectives.

Professional Engagement:
·  Actively participate in the profession at the national level
·  Maintain a record of scholarship

Qualifications:
·  Graduate degree from an ALA-accredited institution or extensive relevant library experience
·  10 (ten) years of professional library experience
·  At least five years of demonstrating progressive management and leadership experience.  Three or more years supervising and evaluating librarians in one or more of the following areas: instruction services, information services, or subject liaison coordination
·  Proven ability to to lead and work with teams to accomplish shared goals
·  Knowledge and understanding of the changing roles and technologies of academic and research libraries
·  Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines in order to conceptualize and pursue new solutions to problems
·  Experience with best practices in information literacy, including the ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education,
·  Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Preferred:
·  Second advanced degree
·  Outstanding interpersonal skills; excellence in written and oral communication
·  Project planning experience
·  Experience working with Offices of Research (i.e. Vice President for Research)
·  Familiarity with the strategic planning process in an academic environment
·  Experience with a shared governance model and a bargaining unit environment
·  Familiarity with the standards for scholarship needed for tenure and promotion of faculty within the University libraries
·  Established record of scholarship
·  Experience with budgeting for operations, resources, and grant awards.
