Digital Archivist, RIT Archives, Rochester Institute of Technology


RIT Archives has an exciting and dynamic opportunity for an archives professional interested in establishing and building, in collaboration with others, a robust and sustainable digital preservation and digital archiving program.


This key strategic position will work closely with the University Archivist and staff from across departments to create policies and procedures for the management of born-digital and digitized records.


Primary Responsibilities


  *   Managing the lifecycle of born-digital and digitized records by developing, documenting, and implementing digital archiving workflows, procedures, and policies.

  *   Processing and providing access to born-digital archival collections by appraising, organizing, and describing into finding aids.

  *   Providing leadership and guidance to staff on the preservation and transfer of born-digital and digitized materials.

  *   Cross-training and collaborating with colleagues from across the RIT Libraries and RIT on workflows relating to born-digital and digitized materials, including digital archives management and digital preservation.

  *   Serving as RIT Archives point person, in close collaboration with Metadata and Digital Scholarship Services, for Luna, the libraries’ Digital Asset Management platform, and Digital Commons, the libraries’ digital repository.

  *   Managing the RIT Archives’ Archive-IT web archiving program.



Department/College Description


With a mission to advance knowledge, spark creativity, and connect communities, RIT Libraries is an integral part of teaching, learning, and research at RIT. RIT Archives is a dynamic outward-facing teaching and research collection that works closely with students, faculty, and the external community. Collaborations include partnering with faculty to include archive materials in classes and curriculum, student-driven exhibitions, grant-funded digitization projects, and alumni events. RIT Archives collects and makes accessible physical and digital materials relating to the rich history of RIT, Deaf culture and history, the history of entrepreneurship, and artwork by RIT alumni, faculty and students.  Through digital and physical exhibits, teaching, digitizing, and public programming, RIT Archives seeks to creatively and innovatively engage the RIT community and beyond with the collections under its care.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Degree:


MLIS from an ALA accredited program or a MA in public history or museum studies

Experience:


At least 3-5 years of experience working in an archival setting and working with born-digital and digitized materials.


Specialized Skills:


  *   Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  *   Experience with training colleagues, especially on technological tools, in a team-based environment.

  *   Experience with tools and software to capture, manage, and deliver born-digital and digitized records and with transferring content from legacy media such as hard drives, flash drives, floppy disks, servers, zip disks, and A/V (such as VHS).

  *   Experience with digital archiving tools such as BitCurator, ePadd, mediaInfo, Ffmpeg, Exiftool, Siegfried, Bulk Extractor, and third party APIs for Cloud transfers.

  *   Experience with archiving tools and systems such as ArchivesSpace, Archive-It, and Digital Commons.

  *   Ability to develop and maintain finding aids using contemporary tools in accordance with national standards.

  *   Ability to work independently, communicate effectively, and work collectively as a team.




Working Knowledge of:


  *   Strategies used by the archival community for managing born-digital and digitized archival materials which align with nationally recognized standards such as OAIS and NDSA.

  *   A wide variety of library and archives-specific technology.

  *   Encoded Archival Description (EAD)

  *   Controlled vocabularies used in describing archives, including Library of Congress Subject Headings, Art and Architecture Thesaurus, Union List of Artist Names, and Thesaurus for Use in College and University Archives

  *   Archival and preservation concepts, methodology, and techniques

  *   Research methodologies and skill in providing research assistance

  *   U.S. Copyright law as it pertains to archives and special collections

  *   Archival ethics
