Hi Code4Lib,

I want to share a virtual event happening next week, on Tuesday, May 16 at
10am, which celebrates the launch of a new digital project. The Unionist
Unified: Connecticut's First Abolitionist Newspaper shares the story of The
Unionist, a short-lived but influential abolitionist publication. Between
1833 and 1834, The Unionist published approximately 60 issues, but only
five of those issues remain available from libraries and archives. Jennifer
Rycenga, Professor of Humanities at SJSU has performed extensive archival
research to provide the most complete possible picture of the publication
and its historical context.

On the technical side, this project was built using Mincomp/Wax (
https://minicomp.github.io/wax/), which is a Jekyll-based static site
generator for digital exhibits. We probably won't get too deep into
technical issues at the event, but if you are interested in an example of a
collaborative digital humanities project built with minimal infrastructure,
this may be relevant.

The website will launch at the event on May 16, but if you would like to
learn more, please see this with Jennifer Rycenga:
https://blogs.sjsu.edu/newsroom/2023/abolitionist-legacy-preserved-with-digital-exhibit/

You can register for the event at:
https://events.sjsu.edu/event/the_unionist_unified
Speakers Lou Turner of the University of Illinois and Joan DiMartino of the
Prudence Crandall Museum will join the project team to provide context and
commentary.

All the best,
Nick
