Last week, Thursday 29th June 2023, the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) and The UK National Archives celebrated the release of the Novice to Know-How (N2KH) learning pathway on email preservation with an online launch event.

The Novice to Know-How Email Preservation course is the latest addition to the successful N2KH online learning pathway and is aimed at learners who already have a solid foundational knowledge of digital preservation and are looking to develop intermediate-level skills. Just like the previous N2KH-courses in digital preservation, the new training is conceived of and funded by The National Archives (UK) and delivered by the DPC.

Members of the worldwide digital preservation community joined the festive launch event which included short presentations on the background to the course, its contents, as well as some quiz-based fun and opportunities to ask questions and chat about the issues relating to preserving email.

Sharon McMeekin, Head of Workforce Development for the DPC, talked about the development of the course. “Due to the combination of a short timeline, a topic that was relatively new to us, and the aim to provide a learning experience for those beyond a beginner level, this was the most challenging Novice to Know-How yet. I think we got there though and I'm proud of the course we've created and its emphasis on practical options. I hope it helps practitioners establish email preservation workflows at their organizations. I know I was itching to develop one after we completed the course!”

Attendees of the event were given the exclusive opportunity to sign up for N2KH Email Preservation before the course was shared with the wider community. The N2KH Email Preservation course is now freely accessible to all via the DPC's learning portal. Find out more about Novice to Know-How and sign up now!

Special Thanks

The DPC is grateful to The National Archives (UK) for creating this opportunity and supporting professional development for digital preservation. We would also like to offer special thanks to Chris Prom and Ruby Martinez from the University of Illinois and to Tricia Patterson at Harvard Library for so generously sharing the email preservation training materials they developed, allowing us to build from a strong foundation.
