i used a pacific image 35mm bulk scanner with a 50 or 100 slide thing in it... was slooooooooowwwww but pretty much flawless... and since it was doing 50 or so at a time the speed didn't bother me at all
not cheap, but they show up on ebay pretty regularly and well worth it for the hassle

A report from both sides -- I tried the cheap route ("digitizers" that cost under $100) and can tell you that they will not do a good job.
I bought an Epson perfection v600 a few years ago and fully agree that it is the right equipment and that makes a huge difference.
It is expensive, so the suggestion of finding an institutional solution is an excellent one (and protects your future time because once you own one, you're in danger of offering to scan for others.... my sister-in-law's about to send me all her slides, so buyer beware! :-)

You might check with your Media Center about using theirs (https://www.swarthmore.edu/language-and-media-centers/media-center -- it specifically mentions "socialize" as an approved activity, so it's not strictly curricular-use-only), particularly if you go with him. Or your (his) local public university's library.
Assuming you're talking family photos or a similar finite collection, institutions are likely to have much better equipment than it'd be worth buying for home use. And people to help you get started.
