Re: Whither the ILS or LSP?

Hi Mark,

I feel a little bit like I'm in the same boat as you - I've been at this
for a number of years now - managing ILS and doing work around such
systems. For me it's been since the late 90s and this really feels like one
of the most transformative times in technology that I've been through. It
is however hard to tell which way things are going to break. To me, it
feels like the pros are starting to outweigh the cons - but I will
acknowledge that current environmental impacts aren't great. Things seem to
[...]

I approach them as a learning aid. My main resources are my Udemy instructors, various web
forums online resources, and official documentation. But if I still have questions, sometimes an
llm can help clarify things. You are always better off asking a real person, but sometimes
people who are not getting paid get tired of answering technical questions. [...]

You're right to listen to those doubts. The use of LLMs is a
cognitive hazard, magnified when used in contexts you're not already
an expert in: https://www.baldurbjarnason.com/2025/trusting-your-own-judgement-on-ai/

The code they produce, even when it functions as intended, is
impossible to maintain: code without an author is tech debt as soon as
it is produced, because there is no individual with the understanding
that comes from writing it.
Whither the ILS or LSP?

I've not been a list member in some years and recently joined again. I hope this question - "Whither the ILS or LSP" - is not off-putting. I wonder if this problem has been solved to death? Here is why I ask.

I received my MLS from Mizzou in May '86 and started my first library job in June '86. Fast forward and I've worked 40 years. That includes 9 years in the library automation industry and 9 more years as a systems librarian. The only thing I've never done is write a serious piece of code. Last November, out [...]

Good afternoon y'all,

I just put up a new dataset of RSS feeds on GitHub. 399 GLAM-related
feeds, all human-verified, most updated this year (a couple dozen
updated in 2025, nothing earlier than that.) The feeds are available
in a CSV file with the following feeds:

url
title
description
site_url
language
latest_item_date
latest_item_date_raw
item_count

More will be added over time; this is just the start.
Hi Folks,

One to take a look at. New York has a new 3D printing law on the books that will require printing coordinates to be validated by a secondary service/registry before printing is enabled.

The law is supposedly about "gun control" specifically 3D printed ones, but the argument is flawed and the ramifications for those using 3D printers go much further.
I believe I am the third person to express this... Chiming in over email with possible interest in this possible group is not effective and spams the inbox for those who are NOT interested.

Some better avenues as a way to opt in (all which have been articulated):
1. slack - there is even a slack channel for ai.
2. someone start a separate listserv.
3. someone plan a meeting. In that space establish a better way to communicate. [...]

Hello all,

*Apologies for crossposting, you may see this message on other lists you
are subscribed to.*

Most of us in the knowledge sector genuinely care about equity and shared
power. But when things get hard (when resources are tight, timelines are
short, or the stakes feel high) our decision-making processes are often the
first place those values quietly slip away. And honestly, that's not
surprising, because many of us work in organizations that are
under-resourced, volunteer-driven, or navigating significant transition. We
care deeply about doing this work equitably, and yet we often lack the
formal training or organizational infrastructure [...]

I am trying to teach myself to code, and I have found that Claude is very useful if you have very specific technical questions and don't have an expert on call, such as a professor, that you can ask. I don't think what I am doing would be possible if I didn't have that. [...]
