I approach them as a learning aid. My main resources are my Udemy instructors, various web
forums online resources, and official documentation. But if I still have questions, sometimes an
llm can help clarify things. You are always better off asking a real person, but sometimes
people who are not getting paid get tired of answering technical questions. [...]

cognitive hazard, magnified when used in contexts you're not already

New 3D printing law might have an impact on GLAM

One to take a look at. New York has a new 3D printing law on the books that will require printing coordinates to be validated by a secondary service/registry before printing is enabled.

The law is supposedly about "gun control" specifically 3D printed ones, but the argument is flawed and the ramifications for those using 3D printers go much further. [...]

Primary Research Group has published Survey of Academic Library Special
Collections: Trends in Digitization, a new report examining digitization
workloads, media formats, future digitization priorities, backlog size,
technology use, staffing, digitization-on-demand requests, and resource
constraints in academic library special collections.

The report finds that digitization programs are active but constrained.
Text and photographs/images dominate the workload. For text, 46.15% say it
accounts for a significant percentage of digitization work and 11.54% say
it accounts for the bulk. For photographs/images, 34.62% say they represent
a significant percentage and 19.23% say they account for the bulk. Audio

Some better avenues as a way to opt in (all which have been articulated):
1. slack - there is even a slack channel for ai.
2. someone start a separate listserv.
3. someone plan a meeting. In that space establish a better way to communicate. [...]

I've got a donor looking to digitize a film reel and then donate the file, but they're hesitant to mail it out anywhere. Most of my usual vendors have cost minimums as well.

Chiming in, I wrote an immediate response to the Parable AI 'hype' story, which is creative writing.

But I want to emphasize and echo a few pieces of Steve's very good response on this piece. Thank you Steve.
The three buckets are very important and accurate. I appreciate that librarians are more than ready to grapple with the fact that technology comes at a cost, and we're in an era when environmental costs are very real, and it's ok to measure the use of a tech gadget against that cost.
