Two new Software Analyst/Programmer positions are available in the Indiana
University Digital Library Program in support of the Variations3 digital
music library project recently funded by IMLS. These positions are located
at Indiana University Bloomington.

Software Analyst/Programmer: Digital Music Library User Interface - PA12/13/14
Position# 00012391

NOTE: This position is funded through September 30, 2008 with
potential for renewal. Final appointment level will be dependent on
qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

The newly funded Variations3 digital music library project is seeking
a user interface programmer to design and develop the front-end for a
digital music library software system to be deployed at institutions
around the nation. Based on the pioneering work of Variations2 (
http://variations2.indiana.edu), Variations3 will take the system that
is currently in production at Indiana University Bloomington and,
based upon requirements gathered from partner institutions, transform
it into a that can be readily implemented elsewhere. Technical
development is in support of a major grant from the Institute of
Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

Responsibilities include user research, requirements and design
specifications, prototyping, evaluation, development, and support of
the user interface for a complex set of distributed
applications. These applications provide students and faculty with
online access of digitized music and annotations via QuickTime-based
streaming audio and scanned scores. A metadata model, designed
specifically for searching music collections, underlies these
functions and is supported by custom tools for digitizers and
catalogers. In addition, the applications integrate with other
information systems on campus such as course registration, the online
library catalog, course reserves listings, and authentication
services.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required. Graduate degree in computer science or
closely related field preferred. Professional experience in user
interface design and development required. Two or more years of
programming experience required, including experience with Java Swing
and Web user interface technologies. Must also have some familiarity
with Unix, relational databases, and Perl. Experience with a digital
audio/video streaming technology such as QuickTime highly desired, as
well as experience with digital libraries or digital media
applications. Experience in cross-platform user interface development
(Windows and Macs) very valuable. Working knowledge of music and music
notation valuable but not required. Ability to interact professionally
with faculty, librarians and technical staff required. Good customer
service and communication skills required.

experience required, including substantial experience with Java,
relational databases, and XML. Experience in Java web application
development, Unix system administration, Perl, networking, Web
servers, and Web technologies is also essential. Experience with
digital libraries or digital media applications highly
desired. Experience with digital audio/video and streaming multimedia
desired. Experience with security technology, Web services, and
software packaging desired. Working knowledge of music and music
notation valuable but not required. Ability to interact professionally
with faculty, librarians and technical staff required. Good customer
service and communication skills required.
