I'd recommend hosting offsite unless:
* You have really private stuff, that you really need to stay private.
* You can afford to have people on-call whenever you care about being
* You can afford redundancy for a lot of gear, and the skill and
planning to test the redundancy on a recurring basis.
For normal web hosting, though, you just can't beat the commercial
guys. Even cheap, cheap, cheap hosting (Dreamhost, for example) is
really good -- uptime is constant, backups are automatic, restores
are trivial, and you really have a lot of freedom in what you can
install and run.
