Information Technology Specialist, Desktop Network Services, Library
Information Technology Division, position number 78690, full time,
general funds, available 02/08.
Duties: Perform professional work related to client/server hardware and
software technology used in the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Library.
Perform technical work involving installation, configuration, debugging,
troubleshooting, maintaining and enhancing specialized application
software for institutional repository and/or content management system(s).
Work effectively in a collaborative team environment with other
technical and professional staff within the unit to support a variety of
digital library services, including but not limited to institutional
repository and digital image delivery systems. Interact effectively with
faculty & staff while implementing or improving functionality and
troubleshooting technical application issues. Work with and communicate
successfully with people with a wide range of computer and internet
experience.
Employ organizational and problem-solving skills, be flexible and able
to adapt to changing assignments; operate independently when
appropriate, multi-task and effectively track multiple ongoing jobs.
Assist in writing test plans and documentation. Test software functions,
update documentation as appropriate. Resolve software configuration and
functionality problems by collaborating with specialists, technicians,
librarians and staff as well as appropriate user groups and communities
then writing or modifying program code. Assist with development of
databases of digital/digitized text, graphic, photographic, and
multimedia content to support research and library objectives.
Minimum qualifications: Possession of a baccalaureate educational
degree. Functional knowledge of programming support for (or applicable
to) digital content management and/or institutional repository system(s)
demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply
principles, concepts, methodology and terminology. Functional knowledge
and understanding of technology, systems, hardware and software
associated with digital content management and/or institutional
repository system(s). Demonstrated ability to recognize problems,
identify possible causes and resolve routine problems. Demonstrated
ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and
procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team
members and individuals. Experience with Linux-type operating systems,
commands, and utilities. Experience or training in programming in at
least one language such as C++, Java, Perl, Python, PHP, or similar
open-source object-oriented web application tools. Demonstrated ability
to log activities, document decisions and update procedures on a timely
basis. Demonstrated ability to learn new application packages and skills
quickly, make connections, integrate disparate information to find
effective solutions. Demonstrated ability to recognize and determine
underlying and/or related issues when problem solving. Demonstrated
ability to prioritize tasks responsibly. Demonstrated ability to resolve
computer-related hardware & software configuration and functionality
issues. Ability to work outside normal hours occasionally, and to work
early AM, late PM, holidays and/or weekends if scheduled. Any equivalent
combination of education and/or professional work experience which
provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as
indicated.
Desirable qualifications: Graduation from accredited 4-yr
college/university w/major coursework in information or computer
science, management information systems or related field. Course work
related to the systems which are the subject of position. At least 1 yr
of responsible professional experience in installation, configuration,
management and/or troubleshooting of content management and/or
institutional repository system(s). Knowledge of and experience with
markup language systems including HTML, XML, XSLT and related style
sheet systems. Web development experience, including dynamic creation of
HTML, use of web forms, remote database access, cascading style sheets,
full-text indexing/searching. Experience with current web server
technology and programs such as Apache and Apache Tomcat. Experience
working in a collaborative environment in an institution of higher
education or similar organization. Work experience in providing
application programming support in an academic information technology
setting.
Pay range: PBA, minimum $2,938/month.
