The University of North Texas Libraries has a position open in the Digital Projects Unit for a Programmer II.
The Digital Projects Unit (DPU) leads the development and deployment of digital collections and services for the UNT Libraries. For the past four years, the unit has been developing access and preservation services using Open Source software and has a strong commitment to the Open Source community.
The position of Web archiving programmer reports to the head of the DPU and works in conjunction with the other digital libraries programmers in the unit. This position will be responsible for development of services for crawling, storing and presenting back Web harvested content. The position is expected to use a variety of tools such as Heritrix, Wayback and NutchWax in addition to the development of custom scripts to support general Web archiving activities at the UNT Libraries.
The position prefers experience working with Java-based Servlet technologies such as Tomcat and Jetty as well as a strong desire to work with scripting languages such as Python. Experience with a version control system such as Subversion is a plus. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with a Linux server environment, and will be familiar with Open Source tools and software packages. In addition to Python, working knowledge of other software scripting languages such as Perl, Ruby or shell scripting is useful.
We are a cooperative, friendly environment, and our ideal candidate will enjoy working as part of a team. We take an open approach to information sharing within our unit. Good communication and interpersonal skills are an asset. You need not be an extrovert, but the position of department hermit is already claimed.
