David,
A few other projects that are treading into this territory are
the Library of Congress' Chronicling America:

Kochief:
http://code.google.com/p/kochief/
And I've been doing some work (although very early stages, yet) with
Blacklight running off of the Talis Platform:
http://blacklite.heroku.com/
which will eventually pull in the Umlaut
(http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Umlaut) to provide a bridge
between OpenURL and linked data.
It's pretty early going in this arena, however.
