Responsibilities
The New York Times Company is looking for an engineer to join its
Research and Development group. R&D is collecting real time data sets
continually from resources across the corporation. The data scientist
will manage the collection, presentation and processing of the
information to be utilized for various projects within the NYT
Company. The ideal candidate will be able to efficiently collect and
process the real time data, determine interesting and actionable
insights to the patterns and processes, and provide multiple API and
services to other teams. The candidate will be working with various
R&D initiatives including visualization and research prototypes to
better understand the use of NYT content to realize improvements to
existing services and identify new product opportunities. The
candidate will be required to perform presentations of the data
insights to various NYT business units and present new project ideas
for consideration. This position calls for a self-starter who is also
capable of being part of a select team.
Requirements:
- BS/MS degree in Computer Science or Engineering
- Experience with managing Amazon Web Services within a team environment
- Has demonstrated handling and processing very large real time data sets
- Fluent in Java. Python is a plus
- Hadoop MapReduce experience a must
- Experience with Hive, HBase or Pig, and Cascading a plus
- Has created APIs from near time data processing for use by other web services
- Working knowledge of MySQL with large data sets
- Experience with SVN and Eclipse IDE
- Has the ability to present technical information to small and medium
sized non-technical audiences
- Strong communication, problem solving and analytical skills
- Flexible team player able to work across diverse environments and
organizations
- 5 to 10 years of development experience
