Hi folks,

I'm Martin Halbert, Dean of Libraries at the University of North Texas. I wear a couple of NDSA hats. UNT is one of the founding members of the NDSA and a long time web archiving institution, dating back to the founding of the Cyber Cemetery for defunct government websites that UNT created years ago. I am also the president of the Educopia nonprofit that operates the MetaArchive network for cultural memory organizations, one of the first NDIIPP programs. I look forward to working with you in coming months.

Best regards,

Martin Halbert, PhD, MLIS
Dean of Libraries and Associate Professor

Welcome to the NDSA Content Working Group!

We're pleased that you've signed up as a Founding Member of the National Digital Stewardship Alliance. The NDSA is a collaborative effort among government agencies, educational institutions, non-profit organizations and businesses to preserve a distributed national digital collection for the benefit of citizens now and in the future.

There are 5 NDSA working groups: Content; Standards and Practices; Infrastructure; Innovation; and Outreach. You've signed up for the Outreach Working group, but you're welcome to participate in others.

Each working group will have co-chairs, one from the NDSA community, and one from the Library of Congress. I'm Abbie Grotke and I'll be the Library of Congress co-chair for this working group. While the NDSA organizational structure is beginning to be put into place (including who the working group chair from the NDSA is), the LC co-chairs wanted to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves and officially kick-off the working group listservs.

The first order of business is to make sure you are the appropriate person from your institution to be signed up for the Content Working Group. If a colleague of yours will be participating in this group instead of you, or in addition to you, please contact me directly ([log in to unmask]) for them to be added to the listserv (or if you'd like to be removed). We encourage multiple participants within and across working groups. And remember, your institution can change at any time if a particular working group is not a good fit.

The second thing we'd like to do is to get a better sense of the participants who are on this list and interested in the Content Working Group.

I invite you to post a quick message to say hello, introduce yourselves, and tell us a little about what brought you to this Working Group!

I'll get us started:

I've been at LC for over 13 years working on various digital library projects, initially with the National Digital Library's American Memory program. Currently I am in the Office of Strategic Initiatives as the Web Archiving Team Leader. I work very closely with our selecting officials around the Library who decide what collections we build and what websites to archive.

Recently I've also joined the NDIIPP coordinating team and am tasked with working on all things content for NDIIPP. I've been part of a group here developing the Recollection tool we gave a workshop on at the partner meeting this year. In 2009, I helped organize and participated in the public policy content strategy meeting (http://www.digitalpreservation.gov/news/2009/20090827news_article_public_policy_meeting.html), and am currently helping plan follow-up meetings to that and two others which focused on news (http://digitalpreservation.gov/news/2009/20091001news_article_digitalnews_meeting.html) and geospatial data (http://digitalpreservation.gov/news/2009/20091120news_article_geospatial_meeting.html). The next news meeting will focus on citizen journalism, and the geospatial meeting will focus on appraisal. I'm very excited to be participating in these upcoming meetings, and to learn more from you all about the types of content you care about, the challenges you face, and what we can accomplish together as a part of NDSA.

Best,
Abbie
