This is an exciting opportunity at Northwestern University Library to
work with and code a variety of library websites and applications.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Head of Web Technologies, develops, tests,
maintains, and supports high-performance interactive web-based
applications. Oversees the development of the site concept, interface
design, and architecture of the library's existing and new Web
development projects. Designs, develops, troubleshoots, debugs, and
implements software code (such as HTML, Perl, PHP, Java, Ajax) for
library websites. Assures appropriate interface implementation.
Integrates web applications with backend databases. Coordinates and
provides technical support for web-based applications; investigates
developing technologies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: (See posting for additional info)
1. Development (35%): Architects, develops, deploys, maintains and
supports web sites and related systems, communication components, and
web applications, written in a variety of scripting and programming
languages (i.e. Perl, PHP, Java, Ajax); Develops interactive
interfaces and database solutions to integrate web services into the
library's Drupal based public website, staff intranet and other web
sites maintained by the library.
2. Maintenance (25%): Perform regular code and system maintenance to
existing projects, Web applications, and library systems, including
authentication and authorization components. Works closely with the
other staff in the division and NUIT to monitor, troubleshoot and
resolve server-side, application issues.
3. Project Planning (20%): Serves as technical lead on
cross-departmental projects within the library and university. Plan
upcoming projects, gather requirements, determine scope, estimate
timeline, document project tasks and meet with internal library staff
regarding project needs.
4. Communication (10%): Coordinates activities relating to web
servers with central university IT departments (including security,
upgrades and maintenance, single sign-on, LDAP, etc.); setup IP
restrictions and other firewalls as needed.
5. Documentation (10%): Prepare documentation to effect knowledge
transfer of application systems and local software development.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (See posting for additional info)
1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or
the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
from which comparable skills can be acquired;
2. 3-5 years of related professional experience.
3. Thorough knowledge of current web application programming and
delivery standards; command of HTML and CSS authoring systems, site
management and assessment;
4. Advanced hands-on Web design and development experience; advanced
proficiency in multiple web application programming and scripting
languages (e.g. HTML, XHTML, CSS, DHTML, XML, PHP, JavaScript, AJAX,);
5. Demonstrated experience with web/database application development
(e.g. MySQL, Oracle);
6. Experience with web-based content management systems (e.g.
Drupal, Plone, Joomla);
