The UK Discovery Developer competition which is designed to encourage (and show the power of) the reuse of open (meta)data in libraries, archives and museums was launched on the 4th July. The original deadline for the competition was 1st August, but due to demand it has now been extended to the 22nd August.

There are lots of prizes on offer, as well as (I'm sure it would go without saying) the respect of your peers :) All you have to do is use at least on of the ten data sets featured by the competition - details are at http://discovery.ac.uk/developers/competition/ and data sets listed at http://discovery.ac.uk/packages/api/demos/paclist.php (and at the bottom of this email). (NB you aren't limited to these data sets - use any others you like, as long as you use at least one of the ones featured in some way at the same time)

MusicNet Codex
The MusicNet Codex provides canonical linked data references, aka “minted” URIs, for classical music composers. These URIs are associated with recognized reference data sources in Musicology like COPAC, RISM, Grove, the British Library into standard representative pointers for composers. Basic biographical data is also available (dates of birth and death) Data is available as Linked Data (RDF) in a number of ways (including a dump of the entire dataset) detailed in the documentation. There is also a standard web interface to search and browse the data.

Archives Hub Linked Data
Archives Hub descriptions of archive collections output as Linked Data. This provides a perspective on the people, organisations, subjects and places connected with the archives that are described. External links are provided to other datasets, such as the Virtual International Authority File. This is a small test dataset describing archives held by UK higher education institutions. The data is derived from a sample of the archival finding aids held by the UK Archives Hub. http://data.archiveshub.ac.uk/

English Heritage Places
This dataset contains metadata for about 400,000 nationally important places as recorded by English Heritage, the UK Government's statutory adviser on the historic environment. This dataset covers features located in England and is divided into various types: Listed Buildings – buildings of special architectural or historic interest Scheduled Monuments – nationally important sites and monuments from all periods of history Registered Parks & Gardens – landscapes and naturally occuring features of national importance Historic Battlefields – sites of important battles in English history Protected Wreck Sites – sites of shipwrecks of national importance

The National Archives (TNA) UK are located in Kew, in the west of London. They are the UK government’s official archive. The images made available via the Flickr Commons represent a tiny part of TNA's collection ranging from Jane Austen's Will to a map showing the extent of German attacks on Birmingham in November and December 1940 In terms of re-use the text at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/legal/images.htm is slightly unclear, but includes the statement: "Images from The National Archives that are part of The Commons on Flickr are labelled 'no known copyright restrictions [?]' indicating that The National Archives is unaware of any current copyright restrictions on these images, either because they are Crown copyright and the copyright is waived or the term of copyright has expired." Images on Flickr Commons are marked as 'No known copyright restrictions'

Jerome: University of Lincoln Library data
Bibliographic information from the University of Lincoln's library, archive service, journal subscriptions, institutional repository and more is being made available as part of the Jerome project.

Tyne and Wear Museums Collections (Imagine)
Part of the Europeana Linked Open Data, this is a collection of metadata describing (and linking to digital copies where appropriate) items in the Tyne and Wear Museums Collections.

Cambridge University Library dataset #1
This data marks the first major out put of the COMET project. COMET is a JISC funded collaboration between Cambridge University Library and CARET, University of Cambridge. It is funded under the JISC Infrastructure for Resource Discovery programme. It represents work over a 20+ year period which contains a number of changes in practices and cataloguing tools. No attempt has been made to screen for quaility of records other than the Voyager export process. This data also includes the 180,000 'Tower Project' records published under the JISC Open Bibliography Project. 

JISC MOSAIC Activity Data
The JISC MOSAIC (www.sero.co.uk/jisc-mosaic.html) project gathered together data covering user activity in a few UK Higher Education libraries. The data is available for download and via an API and contains information on books borrowed during specific time periods, and where available describes links between books, courses, and year of study.

OpenURL Router Data (EDINA)
EDINA is making the OpenURL Router Data available from April 2011. It is derived from the logs of the OpenURL Router, which directs user requests for academic papers to the appropriate institutional resolver. It enables institutions to register their resolver once only, at [http://openurl.ac.uk](http://openurl.ac.uk "OpenURL Router"), and service providers may then use openurl.ac.uk as the “base URL” for OpenURL links for UK HE and FE customers. This is the product of JISC-funded project activity, and provides a unique data set. The data captured varies from request to request since different users enter different information into requests.
