Job Description:
The City University of New York seeks an entrepreneurial, technology experienced and student-focused professional to become theChief Librarian and Director of Academic Technologies for the New Community College that will open in the Summer of 2012. At a new institution dedicated to academic success and completion for students who typically begin under-prepared, the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership for the development of the College’s Information Commons (library) and all its operational functions and services, support the use of academic technologies throughout the curriculum, as well as serve as the primary advocate for the information commons and academic technology as supports for effective teaching and learning.
Working under the direction of the Chief Information Officer, the successful candidate will partner with the College’s Provost, faculty and staff, and other College and University-wide academic and technology units to lead the definition, planning, implementation, and support of the library's services and related information technologies, instructional systems, infrastructure, materials processing, and physical and digital assets of a technology-rich Information Commons supporting teaching, learning, research, and curricular planning; perform and/or oversee the delivery of reference desk information services in the Commons and via electronic platforms (email, chat, etc.); design and deliver information literacy programs and policies; identify and enhance access to information resources available from other educational and cultural institutions; provide subject-specific instruction to one or more academic areas; create instructional materials; and acquire physical and electronic collections, including e-books and e-journals.
S/he will also work collaboratively with the Director of Information Technology to specify, evaluate and select vendor solutions for classroom technologies and software platforms supporting e-portfolios and other learning and assessment systems that are central to the design and delivery of the College’s learning programs. In addition, the successful candidate will monitor and evaluate trends in emerging technologies, identify possible uses in library services, and provide training in these new technologies for library staff, faculty and students, as appropriate; and recruit, train, and manage a small staff providing reference and related instructional technology services in the library/information commons.
The successful candidate will have a record of scholarship, service and professional achievement that will qualify the individual for a faculty appointment; an understanding of the academic environment and the role of the library in support of all forms of scholarship (teaching, learning, and research); a commitment to direct the information commons and academic technology services in accordance with the mission of the New Community College; and demonstrated experience in developing/enacting strategic plans and grants writing as a means of increasing resources.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in area(s) of expertise or equivalent as noted below. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, interest in productive scholarship or creative achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
Other Qualifications: - In lieu of a Ph.D., an A.L.A. accredited MLS degree AND a second Master's degree in a related subject area required; - Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible library management experience, with three (3) or more years in an academic or research library; - Strong leadership experience in academic libraries, library applications and technologies, including knowledge of traditional library functions, integrated online library system, emerging technologies, and trends in higher education and their impact on library services; - Understanding of the current issues facing academic institutions and academic libraries; - Proven faculty and administrative record with experience as a library and academic technology advocate at the local, state, and national levels; - Experience working with underprepared high school or college students from diverse cultures/backgrounds, with sensitivity to their academic, social and economic needs; - Strong interpersonal communication and organizational and skills, with demonstrated experience initiating efforts to improve college effectiveness, and availability to work evening and weekend hours; - Demonstrated capacity to use and effectively promote a diverse range of effective instructional strategies and openness to adopting new practices; - Enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching and service, particularly in the context of the NCC’s first-year program, interest in productive scholarship or creative achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
