Description and duties:
The Ryerson University Library and Archives has an opening at the
entry Librarian level for a one-year contract as an Innovative
Technologies Librarian. This is a secondment replacement.
The University: Ryerson University is situated in downtown Toronto,
just steps from the Yonge-Dundas subway and the Eaton Centre. With
approximately 27,000 full and part time students, including 2,200
Master’s and PhD students, and the largest Continuing Education
program in Canada with 67,000 course registrations annually, Ryerson
is a dynamic and growing institution. With a focus on undergraduate
applied learning, the University has added a mandate to support
graduate studies, and scholarly, creative and research activities
which embraces its strength in producing graduates who are work-ready.
The University Library: The Library and Archives has a staff of more
than eighty-five including twenty-five librarians. The collection
totals over 600,000 books, 1,700 hard copy serials and an impressive
electronic resources collection of over 33,000 full text journals and
over 120,000 e-books. The library has many innovative and supportive
services, including a strong reference and instruction presence, which
is increasingly mobile and virtual. A rapidly expanded research
mandate complements the university’s traditional undergraduate focus
with new frontiers for emerging digital library support. For more

The Organizational Structure: The Library operates with four primary
departments: Collections Services, Library Learning Services,
Borrowing & Lending Services, and Library Information Technology
Services. Each department has several librarians, and a number of
staff. All have clearly articulated expectations, and some project
teams are shared across departments. The Department Heads are members
of the Library Management Group who, along with the Library
Administrative group, are responsible for the development of strategic
planning and management.
All librarians are members of Library Council and play a part in the
strategic planning and development of the library to meet the needs of
the Ryerson community. The library recently completed a new Strategic
Plan, Building on Success, and a Technology Plan in response to
Shaping the Future: an Academic Plan for Ryerson 2008-2013. Planning
is currently underway to build an exciting new Student Learning Centre
on Yonge Street at Gould St. For more information see

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to design, develop
and incorporate emerging technologies to create web-based library
services, systems, and tools that engage library users and staff in
new and innovative ways. The Innovative Technologies Librarian will be
responsible for:
• The design, development and analysis of web-based library services,
systems and tools
• Management of library programming projects and deadlines including
the supervision of junior programming staff and student employees
• Liaison and collaboration with Computing and Communications Services
and other University departments to further Library initiatives
• Technical mentoring and staff training in new technologies
• Participation in Library and University organizations, committees
and task forces as appropriate
• Provision of reference services as part of the scheduled desk
rotation, including online chat and email services
• Liaison activities for one or more academic departments including
collection development and library instruction may be required during
the contract year.

Qualifications:
MLS, MLIS, MI or an ALA accredited or ALA recognized graduate degree
in Library and Information Science is required. A Bachelor’s degree in
Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field is
desirable.
• Demonstrated proficiency in developing and maintaining
database-driven web applications
• Experience developing interactive web applications using ColdFusion,
PHP, HTML, XML, CSS, SQL, Javascript, AJAX and/or other common tools
• Demonstrated experience with Unix or Linux server platforms, related
software, including Open Source such as Drupal, Wordpress, etc, and
basic system administration utilities
• In depth knowledge of website design, development, implementation,
standards, and accessibility/usability guidelines.
• Ability to integrate Web 2.0 services to ensure the seamless
delivery of online library services
• Knowledge of integrated library systems
• Experience creating and designing multimedia content would be an asset
• Some knowledge or experience with data downloading and software
installation and manipulation for GIS applications would be an asset
• Some experience with developing mobile services
• Ability to collaborate as part of the Library team and with campus
systems expertise at all levels.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
• Creativity and strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to learn new technical skills quickly; ability to meet
deadlines; strong service-orientation.
• Some knowledge of trends in the integration of technology in the
pedagogical process.

Compensation:
This position will be a member of the MAC group at the C42 level and
subject to the terms and conditions governing the employment of
Management and Confidential staff. Salary range: $55,183 - $82,775
(commensurate with qualifications and experience).
