**Position Summary**
The Database Administrator works with DBMS software on three operating systems
(PC, MAC, Unix). Identifies user
requirements, develops databases, tests, coordinates modifications; ensures
performance of database systems, understands platform on which database runs,
adds users to system, designs user interfaces; designs reports,
imports/exports with DBMS tools; installs client/server software updates,
documents databases and data routines, trains users; manages database servers,
implements system security, data integrity, recovery and backup systems.
Implements software upgrades. Creates, maintains bibliographic records and
digital image metadata. Responsible for designing, implementing, evaluating
content of data fields and applying standards. Supports users of over 20
FileMaker Pro databases and related Web sites (research.frick.org). Supports
commercial database applications (ILS, Blackbaud, Gallery Systems TMS). Keeps
current with metadata standards for library, archival, museum image
collections. Oversees Xinet DAMS, works with content
contributors to establish logical file directory structure. Designs metadata
sets for digital assets, applies controlled vocabularies to data fields,
ensures data is written back into header of archival images. Creates,
maintains user groups, group permissions sets, data layouts. Imports external
data into databases, exports data to content distributors. Helps design
reports and develop automated workflows; creates, edits documentation.
**Qualifications**
Knowledge of MS SQL, MySQL, broad knowledge of databases, knowledge of
library, archives, museum applications. Experience with major DAMS (Xinet);
FileMaker Pro; open source content management systems (Drupal, WordPress);
ability to design data reports and export formats for Web sharing (XML, JSON);
knowledge of HTML, XML, XSLT, CSS; experience with Web programming language
(PHP, ruby, Perl); Apache and IIS hosting; CGI scripting, Unix shell
scripting, SQL query design and implementation, PERL, C++ and JavaScript.
Expertise in Macintosh, PC platforms (Linux a plus). Prefer someone with
understanding of MARC, digital image library data standards (Dublin Core, VRA
Core), Adobe XMP, cataloging image metadata, and image rights information.
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent professional experience. A
minimum of five years full-time experience in Information Technology or a
related capacity in a museum or library preferred.
